It's cold at the mo -and not really even Winter yet
DD has a 14tog duvet on her bed and has taken to sleeping with her dressing gown on. I do feel a bit mean - but the heating is on (5.50-8am and 7-10pm) I may put it on 1/2hr earlier in the evenings, as I'm really cold by 7 (and that's wearing thick socks and shoes, ajumper and a tshirt and sittng with a wheat bag. Our house 'eats' fuel though - 17 radiators and all in used rooms (the play room's the least used, but it's like a fridge in there even with the rad on, so I don't want ti turn it down) I see other people's electricty/ gas useage/ bills and I'm so jealous. I use about 125-130 units of electricity a week....:eek: (and taht's with keeping an eye on things and having a monitor!! And we have cavity wall insulation) And that'll increase as it gets colder/ darker....
I need to buy some more thick socks - I only have 4 pairs and 2 are getting thin... May try MAtalan, as there's one just up the road by school
We use about that greent, main thing I do is have bread machine, dishwasher and washing machine running overnight on Economy 7.
We also cook with electricity as no mains gas here ours works out at an average of £15 per week electricity, then the same £15 for the oil inc service cover, then we spend approx £350 per year for coal, logs etc.My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
So we’re empty nesters.
Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).
My mother always served up leftovers we never knew what the original meal was. - Tracey Ulman0 -
For those looking for seeds there's a thread on the Grabbit board for £10 off a £10 spend at Thompson & Morgan.

I've just started noticing an increase to about 135-140 a weekI don't feel so bad now. Eon seemed to think that I was a massive user - I did point out to them that we're a family of 6 in a 4 recep/ 5 bed/ 3 bathroom house - but they said that they still felt I use more than they'd expect... I use the w/machine every day -say about 11-12 loads/ week. Tumble drier used for 20mins to fluff towels (say after every 3-4 washes - I save the towels) F/f and washer/ dryer are A rated appliances. Weekends can see 4 computers on and a tv and a CD player.
I may invest in two of those 'turn everything off standby in one go' things - the tv/ digital box/ dvd player could do with one (you have to move things to turn it off at the plug otherwise) as could the office set up of PC/ 2 printers/ wireless/ modem/ phone charger.... Again it's a moving stff to turn off at plugs job - but not at all practical to do so, as it involves a heavy desk and filing cabinet. Has anyone got one? What do you think? - worth the initial outlay?I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soulRepaid mtge early (orig 11/25) 01/09 £124616 01/11 £89873 01/13 £52546 01/15 £12133 07/15 £NILNet sales 2024: £200 -
I got one at morrisons petrol station greent it was 4.99 and is one of the best things I ever had. I want another one for another room0

Greent - I have some of those remote control sockets things for inaccessible plugs, you plug them into the socket and then the plug plugs into the remote socket, then its just a case of using the remote to turn off stuff. They are about £5 for four plugs in Asda I think. Absolutely brilliant. We are using more electricity than you at the moment, it had sat around the 125 units for ages but the last two weeks its hit 160/170 units, as I am having to use the dryer for almost everything at the moment and with the kids being sick all the time there is no end to the amount of towels and bedding I am washing.0

OOh - thanks for that - kittie & kidcat - they're cheaper than I thought! Even better! Will have a look-see when I'm out and about
And I'm 'glad' others use similar electricity amounts to me - Eon made me feel extravagant - and I'm not!!!I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soulRepaid mtge early (orig 11/25) 01/09 £124616 01/11 £89873 01/13 £52546 01/15 £12133 07/15 £NILNet sales 2024: £200 -

Morning everyone - I've just been skimreading. Am sending congrats, hugs and sympathy to all as appropriate.
This thread is like a little refuge for me. A few of my usual MSE threads had unpleasantness on them recently that really upset me (because I am a wuss) and made me want to stay away. Kept dipping in here though. It really makes me feel better to see folks being nice to each other. Plus Mardatha makes me laugh my head off! :rotfl:You are 60 going on 6 I reckon!
I've been really cold and have had to have the heat on a lot so worried about the bill but am sure I will manage something, have saved quite a bit towards it already. It shouldn't be as expensive as it is to run but there's something wrong with it. It took 24 hours of being on continuously to get the house up to 18C and outside temps aren't that bad. The heating system is rubbish and looks awful (was poorly fitted) and the guy who supplied it has promised to sort it out for over 2 years (some of the delay is my fault) ... and now he's making out like I should pay him for a refit. I'm considering going to Small Claims over it, and/or publicising it. It's a relatively new type of heating system, has been featured on TV and I've had a lot of enquiries about it. I have held off criticising it because I thought he would put it right and I haven't seen it working properly so to speak. But my patience is running out now, have lost count of the times I've rung and he's not called back or fobbed me off. My ex says he'll help too if I want but as much as he thinks I'm soft, he is probably even softer unless he loses his temper and goes OTT .. which I don't want for his sake. So we will see ... please keep your fingers crossed it gets sorted as the unfairness (not to mention being cold and huge bills) upsets me. Feels good to have got all that off my chest ... thanks for your indulgence!
So, got to tidy up now before a workman comes to finish another unfinished job in the house. As I started tidying, I found my Christmas tree and deccies ... I have a ridiculous amount! I must sort them out and freecycle the excess.
Have a good day everyone!Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!
