I agree with the others - don't risk it
My BIL is currently in intensive care with kidney failure after e-coli apparently caused by beef. More stable now but on has been sedated/on ventilator for nearly 2 weeks and very nearly died. I have always been a bit gung ho about best before dates etc but will certainly be much more careful now!0 -
The price rises are so noticeable, that's for sure - and special offers often aren't all they're cracked up to be either (eg The price has risen first and then it's on '1/2 price' offer) It's not just a penny or so, either - some are quite high jumps.
I've given in and 'advanced' the heating tonight - at 4.30. I'm wearing a tshirt & 2 jumpers and my hands and feet are hurting because they're cold, so I don't care!!! :P I have gone around and closed blinds and curtains early to go with putting it on though. An early night tonight, I hope - DS3 was awake 4x in the night, DS2 once and I've been solidly awake since 5.30 - beginning to flag now (DS3 is almost 18 months and has only slept through 3x - about 11/12pm until 6)
Easy teas tonight - Guides, so DD is having soup (just needs reheating) DS1 & DS3 are having macaroni cheese and sausages (DDs cookery today, so reheating) and I'm having a jacket potato with butter and cheese (I'll nuke it and put it in oven with cheesey mac & saus to crisp up) because I really fancy one!

the_cat, I hope your BIL makes a full recovery, it must be horrendous for the family, my thoughts are with you. My OH spent time in intensive care earlier this year, 5 days on ventilator/life support after his appendix burst, it was the worst time of my life, so I know what you're going through.
I too have been a bit gung-ho with sell-by dates, normally if it looked, smelled and tasted okay I'd use it but I'll think twice now!Dum Spiro Spero0 -
Wow, the cat, hope hes ok, good reminder that its not money saving if you end up in hospital. I tend to err on the cautious side but many times I am pulled to maybe risk it.
Greent - my son is exactly the same, almost OCD, its hard but sometimes I sort of forget and people think I'm mad when I say something like "It has to be this way for .." plumber here today changed taps (they were so rough and damaged it hurt to use them) and a toilet seat, DS has come home and cried for the old seat back!! Thankfully we had anticipated it and my dad will fit a replica tomorrow, which we will swap over when we move!!
Little car has broken down today, its almost like he knew that our mechanic flew on his holidays this morning!! ITs sat outside school waiting to be towed.
Missed a GP appointment because of it though, so will have to grovel to get another one.0 -
Oh Kidcat. We have the same thing with my son - or we did when he was younger - he still (usually) needs lots of warning/preparing for change - although just occasionally surprises us by taking it completely in his stride. He was so upset that we were going to skip the old (broken beyond repair) dishwasher that, instead of taking it to the dump, OH kept it for years in the shed! (He is a bit the same himself!) And as for changing our old cars - sold one for scrap and DS locked himself in it so it couldn't be taken away.Jan 2011 GC £300/£150.79 (2 adults, 2 teens, working dog, includes food/cleaning/toiletries)0

Hope your BiL improves the_cat
I think it's worth saying that food doesn't develope e-coli by being out of date, it will be in the food to start with and isn't a problem entirely connected to sell by/use by dates.Piglet

I quite agree and sorry everyone, it is not my intention to scare you
I guess I was just using it as an example due to lovelife wavering about whether to 'risk' meat where there was an obvious question mark (ie: it smelt/looked odd) Better safe than sorry in that sort of case
I will still be buying whoopsie meat and using my common sense over whether there is anything iffy. I just meant to say that if in any doubt at all, then bin it or return it if poss, regardless of dates!!:D0 -
Oh seasalt - that so makes me feel better cos I do stuff like that too, will keep stuff rather than change, but as you say he will surprise us by being totally cool about something we thought he would stress about. I am careful to pick my battles as it were, I look on it that there are some things I cant control so he has to accept that stuff so if I can make it easier on other stuff I will. Bananas are a big issue with him, we have to have bananas in, or he gets really upset, it was the only thing we ran out of during the snow last year, so had to despatch his dad and elder brother on the sledge to nearest Asda a couple of miles away, as he got really distressed. Wish I could find a way of keeping bananas fresh longer than a few days!!
Good news is that little car is now home, and only needs a fuel pump!! This is fairly cheap and can be done here !! Hooray!! DS6 was thrilled when a tow truck pulled up with the car on the back, AA man was a bit miserable though and wasnt at all friendly, whereas the last one allowed him to look inside his van and watch the tow mechanism get folded away.So tomorrow I just need to locate the part and can fit it in about thirty minutes, so relieved.
