Cheaper Oil for Fuel?
Comments
-
Hi Everyone
I'm about to buy a house that has oil fired heating - something I am totally new to. The house has been empty for over a year and the boiler looks pretty old so I plan to have it looked at when I move in. I'd be grateful for any tips, advice or routines I should know about.
Thanks Tulip0 -
Hi Tulip.
Firstly, get your boiler serviced (and have them look at the tank, to check condition AND suggest the capacity) as you plan; friends/neighbours may recommend a suitable engineer if you do not know one. You could even try asking on these forums.
The service report should detail the efficiency of your boiler etc.; as an example our 15-year-old boiler is 93.2% efficient according to the autumn service.
Make sure you ask your questions whilst he is servicing (how old is this boiler & is it still okay or should I start making plans; this kind of thing.)
Unless something is not working, do not agree to any further work - if further work is suggested it is ALWAYS worth seeking another opinion.
Before ordering heating oil check Boilerjuice and The oil-club for prices, THEN ask local suppliers if they will beat your quote.
Please note before ordering: there is often a minimum quantity requirement to get a good price; The oil club is 500litres; many suppliers use 1000 litres. BUT from those suppliers it is usual that if you order 1000 litres and can only fit say 900 litres in your tank, the 1000 litre rate will still apply.
Also note that filling up during the quieter summer months is usually cheaper, if possible of course.
When your boiler is working and you have oil, keep a weekly or fortnightly check at first on the amount of oil remaining.
Then you will know when to order more AND (obviously) how much you use/how long a tank of oil will last you.
I hope that helps as a quick starter.

Thank you so much - this is really useful, I can't wait to get the keys to the new place and finally get going. Hopefully it will work out as a cheaper energy option.0

The Oil Club are quoting 26.19ppl+ here this weekend.
Higher crude prices together with demand (well, it has been cold! ) are to blame.0 -
Oil Club - 26.99
Conquest Oil - 25.990 -
