out of curiosity, how does the price of an apartment compare to the price of a hotel room? ive always seen it as more of a budget option, but some of the things ive read lately makes me thinks thats misguided

You are misguided. With a hotel in NYC you pay dearly and more often than not, you don't get breakfast and you might have quite a small room that's not overly pleasant. With an apartment you may get two or three rooms containing more or less everything you have at home. Therefore, generally speaking, the apartment option is better value.

Yes you might view it as a more "affordable" option, and that it certainly is when you look at the scandalous hotel tariffs in Manhattan. Yet in it's favour, the apartment option offers you the full NYC experience, usually, but not always, at a lesser cost than the equivelant night in a "middling" hotel.

We're planning to stay in an apartment for 9 days and it works out at £80 per night. The apartment is in Manhattan, it has two bedrooms and it also has a grand piano! and we will also be able to use the phone to make local and national calls, inclusive in the cost. Imagine the cost of that if it was called a hotel.

We are staying at the Embassy suites in lower manhattan, it looks nice and we got quite a good deal (we are a family of 5). We had no luck with apartments which we would have prefered. The other option might be to stay outside of NY/manhattan in New Jersey, accomodation is way cheaper there.

Good thing about embassy suites is the free brakfast and the free cocktail happy hour (or usually 2) in the evening :D

    Nice rooms too

wow! I'm going to be in new york at the same time as you and when I was looking for accommodation (both hotel and apartments) a couple of months ago alot of places came up as fully booked. In any case you may want to try this site, this is where I booked my apartment, they may have some last minute spaces (I've previously posted this before here).
