We are staying at the Embassy suites in lower manhattan, it looks nice and we got quite a good deal (we are a family of 5). We had no luck with apartments which we would have prefered. The other option might be to stay outside of NY/manhattan in New Jersey, accomodation is way cheaper there.

When I took the family in 2002 we rented an apartment here:- https://www.ingrite.com.
Ingrite is a Brazilian lady and runs it all herself, she meets you at the airport if you wish which costs if my memory serves me well - about $30 extra. We had the apartment for two weeks, thats me, OH and two boys, who were 16 and 11 then. I think it cost just over £1000 for the two weeks, that included all electricity. It saved us a lot of money and the freedom of our own apartment was great. We stayed at West 51st St (Baby 2) and it was just so convenient for everything.
