I don't tend to watch trailers so this would have spoiled it for me whether it referred to 1 or 1 of 4 characters.
Luckily I don't think I'll be seeing the film any time soon so with the way my memory is lately, will have forgotten about all this by the time I do see it.0 -
At least you lovely people are getting to see some films and discuss them. Once again, there has been nothing down here in Exeter, not since before Christmas. I think that we have fallen off the edge of Britain...:(0

Well just to add my two penneth, as I fear I was the one who inadvertently started this debate!...
I personally don't consider it a plot spoiler if you simply mention details which have already been divulged in a film's promo campaign or trailer. If this were the case then we wouldn't be able to discuss or review anything properly, which would be a real shame.
I only asked if it was a spoiler because it sounded like it easily could've been and it wouldn't be difficult to let something slip accidentally. I haven't seen the trailer and the death of a main character sounded like an integral part of the plot but I understand that that doesn't necessarily make it taboo! If this detail was really going to spoil anyone's enjoyment of the film then it'd be omitted from the trailer, after all.
I'm glad that people can openly discuss films here and I genuinely hope that everyone feels able to express their opinion, whether positive or negative. Hearing the views shared by others definitely helps me to decide whether or not to bother with a film, although I obviously look to other sources too, so a couple of negative reviews here won't necessarily stop me from seeing something.
I'm always very grateful to get free cinema tickets and I do think that the fact that they're free encourages me to be a bit 'braver' and take a bit of a gamble with some films that I'm not so sure I'll like (and wouldn't ordinarily take that risk, if paying). It makes the whole experience all the more rewarding when I do find myself surprised at loving a particular film because I know that, without free tickets, I probably wouldn't have ever seen it and would've missed out! Naturally there will always be some films which disappoint and I don't think it's ungrateful or disrespectful to express this view.
If I choose to take a bit of a punt on a freebie film I don't believe that that makes me any less deserving of that ticket. And by the same token, if somebody decides to get free tickets for a film that they're pretty sure they won't like (but still have a genuine interest in seeing, for whatever reason) then they're just as entitled to do so as the person who is a die-hard fan of that particular Director/Actors etc and would rush out to see the film even at full price.
The only practices which annoy me personally, are when people persistently claim tickets but don't bother using them (or returning them/passing them on)...and of course also when people fraudulently reproduce tickets.
Hooray for free tickets, allowing us to explore and broaden our horizons and form our own opinions on films....and cheers to the unexpected pleasures which make up for the let-downs! :T
We're all here for the same reason, because we love film!0 -

I'm all for discussions and film reviews but if there's any doubt that it's a spoiler, surely it's better to warn at the top so that people can choose whether to read that particular post or not? Many choose not to watch trailers for that very reason - they prefer the element of surprise when actually watching the film.
I love hearing different opinions and have seen films/bought products based partly on someone else's 'negative' review!0 -

I guess I've never really thought of people going out of their way to avoid trailers as I personally love to watch film trailers and always, at the very least, check www.imdb.com trailers and reviews before buying a dvd or deciding what to see at the cinema.
From what you've said, I can understand why you'd find the aforementioned details to be a spoiler but I'm genuinely a bit confused about what would be acceptable to mention....and what exactly constitutes a 'spoiler'?!0 -

I guess if there's any doubt (as you say you had), then mention it at the beginning? To me, mentioning a fundamental part of a plot such as a main character being killed, sounds like a spoiler...
My hubby also loves to watch all the trailers and is forever trying to get me to watch them. I don't personally go out of my way to avoid them, I just don't always make a special effort to and with some films I'd just rather watch the film.
I may have been annoyed if I wanted to see the film, hadn't watched the trailer and then had read the spoiler here when there was no pre-warning that it was going to be a spoiler. As it happens I don't think it's a film I'm particularly bothered about reading spoilers for, but I can definitely see why people would be annoyed.0 -
If the majority of what most people are saying about trailers and spoilers seems to be true, WHY ON EARTH would anyone go and see a film IF they've ALREADY READ THE BOOK, OR it's a REMAKE, OR it's based on a TRUE EVENT and similarly the story is already known ?
BTW, at the end of Titanic ... the ship sinks
And in both WWI AND WWII - Germany lost :rotfl:

I go out of my way to not watch trailers, even to the point of changing the channel when a trailer comes on, or changing radio station when the movie is getting talked about.
I love the surprise of the movies, out of all the movies I've seen only two (Bad Lt and I love you philip morris) which disappointed me, i even walked out at bad lt it was that bad. but ive had some really good surprises - the best being the blind side, and it did, catch me blind sided
any type of spoiler, giving away any of the plot, should be clearly labelled, so people like myself, that want to know nothing about the movies, can enjoy it on the day, on the big screen, as we like to do.
why watch every trailer, and read every review.. then sit thru a movie knowing what's going to happen? where's the fun in that?!0 -

Because, as I said, everyone is different. Some people like that, some people don't. Each to their own. All that's being asked is that choice is given. I really don't see what the problem is with saying you're about to reveal a spoiler of a NEW film.
I'm now going to watch that trailer just to see what it's all about...:rotfl:0 -

I don't read every trailer or read every review!....just find out enough to get a taste of what the film is about - the general premise, setting, genre, style/tone etc....just enough to get a feel and a rough idea about whether or not I'll like it. If I'm quite sure I won't like a film then I won't bother, even for free.
Bearing in mind that the films mentioned here tend to be discussed pre-release, I probably make more of an effort to find out what they're about, because I generally won't have heard about them yet elsewhere (in the media etc).
I agree that it wouldn't be much fun watching a film if you knew everything that was about to happen....but to my mind I don't do that! A general flavour doesn't mean a full on smorgasbord!!!0
