It is colder here tonight and unless I put my hands under the blankets they are quite cold...In some ways having the thermometers is good as I can see what the temperature is but in another way it confirms what you don't want to know.

It was warmer today outdoors and when I went into a shop that was heated I realise what I am now missing, funny isn't it, they tell you how warm you should be if working as an employee but many in their homes can't afford to put the CH on and are in homes that are cold and have to use HWB, fleeces, throws, wear more clothes and look out for thermals.

I am not a softie but we've gone the wrong way and I know it is a political point but the worry is that the cost of living(not luxuries)will rise and our income remain static or go down because wages are low(not living wages)and welfare continues to be cut. And if you can save you are penalised because the threshold is too low before you are hammered.

It may seem OT but it ties in with the decision whether you can eat or heat your home...or both!

Getting close to putting it on here (just north of London), it feels pretty chilly tonight. Still ok with extra fleecy blankets etc but only just - hands are cold! Think the new tennants in the flat downstairs have theirs on already (seen a cot through the window, so supect they need it on for the baby), some nights it has beeen quite nippy outside but comfy in our flat - their dodgy landlord hasn't put any insulation in their ceiling, so their heat just has our floorboards and some carpet to keep it in for them. Thank goodness our flat is owned by a different person, who is quite a reasonable landlord...

Might put the heating on to a lower than usual temperature so it will come on if it drops below that, but not otherwise. Don't think the thermostat temperature sensor is very accurate though, sometimes when it says 18 I am quite comfortable in a jumper, other times I need fleecy layers to be ok! Perhaps it is just variations in humidity though...
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

Definitely to do with the humidity I would say. Cold is one thing but cold and damp is another. As soon as I feel that damp cold mine goes on to keep the house dry. I live on the South Coast and mine went on for the first time last night just for a few hours. Made a huge difference. Remember damp can do a great deal of damage to your home so it's not necessarily just the temperature you need to think about.

Morning all. Temp in the house now is 17.7C. Then I have the windows open as I like to air the house every day.
It is dull and raining here so that does not help. Wet washing indoors as only putting double duvet and towels in tumble dryer. The clothes dry well in 24 hours.
Our house has cavity filled walls and loft insulation. Insulation really does help keep the fuel bill down.
The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)

Well, I had to put on the wall panel heater. Been away for over a week and the house smelt so badly of damp and mouldiness :( even with dehumidifier and opening the windows. It's not cold, just damp.

edit, just to add, when I say *damp* I mean, a strong musty smell in the air, mould on walls and furniture, food growing penicilin on it. The cottage is 300 years old, made of stone and wattle and daub and the inner plaster walls are crumbling. I have to have a fine balance of heat and ventilation. So heat is a necessity rather than a luxury. It's for the house not for me.

    So sorry WTBSsad-eyes-smiley-emoticon.gif

I hope that you soon feel better, you need a hugemo35.gifso many friends on here but sadly so far away...Often friends on here are more understanding than what would be called "Real Life!"

Heating still not on...I probably have enough clothes to last the rest of my life(virtually all CS stuff)but I am now thinking if I have a few more items I can change them more often...build up a decent washload over 2-3 weeks rather than using the washer more often. So I got two tank tops and a jumper for £3 earlier today.

The average temp still seems to be 16c(60.8f)at the lowest and 20c(68f)at best.

I was lovely and warm in bed this morning so stayed put, sorry if that annoys some if working but I am not a scrounger, I do have health problems and often have difficulty getting comfortable in bed and sleep when I am able...I work around my condition...
