Its not a competition people, calm down!

Popperwell, if you are thinking of getting a HWB, you can get them from poundland or 99p shops. They are making the biggest difference to me in the evenings at the moment, expecially for my hands :)

In regards to a lodger, my worry would be that they arent willing to put up with the lack of heating?

Heating on for 30mins here this morning :) as its feeling a bit chilly...and its my birthday!

    Thanks...

    For the information...

Perhaps if I had a lodger I could afford to use the heating more(if they work)maybe I could leave it off whilst they are out...

This government has us all ways...on benefits or low wage with a bedroom Tax coming, changes in council tax, rents, food and utility bills increasing and if you are allowed to take in a lodger to try and offset costs you are penalised because it can mean they reduce your benefits(which may be why you need to have the extra income in the first place)or they may tax you.

In my case I would be doing it only to try and offset the fact my income is too low or is remaining static. I might manage if things stay is it is now and though hard absorb the extra costs but they keep chipping away at what I and many others have.

I would love to save for the future or put into a pension but cannot afford to. Equally, if it were possible there are so many rules that stop you being able to that affects entitlement or help you are unable to.

If working with the new automatic enrolement into a scheme where you are part of a pension scheme, the idea may be sound and if young enough you may build up a tidy sum but if your wage is low already but your daily ordinary bills are difficult to manage they are making living now even more of a problem.

This may be seen as off topic but for most we are keeping the heating off because we cannot afford it.

Its not a competition but just shows how many either live with the worry of not having heating mainly because of what it costs or because income is too low(whether working or needing state help)and most of these people are not spending/wasting their oney on luxuries. Sometimes ideas are shared on how to stay warm in other ways.

We have had a couple of days where we have had it on this year, we both had raging colds and felt it was silly to sit about feeling wretched and be cold too. OH doesnt get company sick pay so it would cost more for him to be off of work than a couple of days heating costs. Apart from that I have put a fleece on in the evenings if it is cold and then taken a water bottle to bed if necesary. Its definatley chillier but not cold enough hear (for me anyway) to have the heating on each night yet.

We do have the heating on when its needed but try first to make sure we are wrapped up. I certainly wouldnt sit in gloves and coat before doing so but long gone of the days of sitting around in shorts and t shirts mid winter with the heating pumping out tropical warmth!

We try to keep a balance whilst keeping an eye on the budget too, but also bear in mind our health and also potential damage to the house by keeping it too cold

I hadn't realised we were only talking about CH. when saying it was off or on.

I don't have CH, just a couple of storage heaters which eat electric, and some stand alone electric heaters, along with a wood burner I've not used yet. So definitely no heating on and also no HWB, fleeces etc yet. :D I've developed a huge tolerance to cold, and talking about hypothermia, one winter I couldn't get the heat above hypothermia level as my small thermometer kept tellling me, "warning, danger of hypothermia." that year I was using hats, gloves and various blankets plus HWB, but still cold. In the end I took myself off to my DD's who did have CH. Bliss.

Last night at the end of a radio programme the dj(he has a studio in his home)said how cosy it was and that his cat was at his feet and it sounded so nice obviuosly not having to think about whether it could be afforded...then there I was under a duvet, wearing gloves, bed socks and pj's...and the house really cold. And this was as early as 8pm at night.

Will I ever have a cosy home again or have to wait until I am put in a nursing home? In a so called rich country with an economy that is supposed to be one of the best in the world this seems so wrong.

Still OFF even though the OH tried to put it on the other night until I pointed out he was wearing shorts and a T-Shirt *sigh*
My eldest cat has be making a fuss about the chill at night by meowing outside the bedroom door, so put him in his 'jumper' (sleeve of old jumper measured to his waist, front leg holes made to fit without cutting into him, sewn edges on leg holes and waist to slow down fraying and jumpers cuff makes excellent elasticated neck hole).
Really hope to get to November, but have a feeling it's going to start getting much colder soon. The end of October could be bitter and never seen a November 5th where it wasn't cold, many bonfire nights bundled up to the eyes as a tot waving a sparkler and trying to inch as close to the bonfire as possible lol

Picture please!! I think I would have a Fat Chance doing that to the master of the house! :rotfl:

The weather is not really cold yet, what are you going to do when it is cold and frosty mornings and nights..?.Wouldnt have thought you can put much more clothing on to sleep....;)

Been nice super sunny day today, so no heating, turning chilly now so now got the GCH on........
  • I've not turned ours on yet. I live in middle floor flat and my neighbour under me tends to put hers on. I just wear my dressing gown and slippers if I am cold. Need to buy some more pjs for winter!!My daughter has an extra blanket on her bed atm.

We haven't switched our central heating or electric heaters on yet. Sitting here in a big jumper this evening though, so guessing it won't be long now! Trying to put it off for as long as possible as I'm not working at the moment and I'll probably have to have the heating on during the day some of the time so that will make our bill go up.
