Is your heating ON or OFF?

Torry that is so right
I despair of the number of posts that will say " we haven't put the heating on but...... the woodburning stove is pumping the heat out....the electric fire is on........we've lit the coal fire...... these are HEAT sources, you are not the resolute toughies you make out
Last year when I raised the same points I was answered by someone who said if it was free it didn't count. :rotfl::rotfl:So if I steal food I can claim not to eat

Nobodyspecial I don't see this as a competition as to who can withstand the cold the longest, people are not putting the heat on to save the pennnies, and if you are getting free wood and your cold then it makes sense to burn it if you so wish. If anything that generates heat is heating, then lightbulbs, rubbing your hands together, etc. I think the poster was trying to convey that she is not paying to heat her place and as this is MSE, i thought that was the point, good for her. By the way, my heating is still not on, I am hoping to last until November, but will put it on if my daughter comes home from uni, so its nice and cosy.
But to say "I don't have the heating on, but I've lit the coal fire" is stupid. As I've said before that would mean anyone without CH could claim not to heat their home at all. And yes, I'm afraid some people do use this thread as "I'm more stoical than you" Of course this is a moneysaving site, but it is disingenuous and dishonest to say " I'm managing without heating" and then to say "but I'm burning free wood" In that scenario you are heating your home. By all means boast of your good fortune that it isn't costing you money, but don't lie and say it isn't heating your home. Bit like saying you're not eating because all the food you have is free0 -

As I don't have CH then I could say I never put the heating on.:rotfl:

Its not a competition people, calm down!
Popperwell, if you are thinking of getting a HWB, you can get them from poundland or 99p shops. They are making the biggest difference to me in the evenings at the moment, expecially for my hands
In regards to a lodger, my worry would be that they arent willing to put up with the lack of heating?
Heating on for 30mins here this morningas its feeling a bit chilly...and its my birthday!

Had the heating on four an hour last week, but other than that nothing. North west facing.Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.

I'm sorry, I don't apologise. That's just the way I am. Homer (Simpson)0 -
No heating on here yet. I put my dressing gown on over my clothes last night as I was chilly but my husband was fine with his jumper on. I do feel the cold more than him anyway
Not "planning" on putting the heating on until after our holiday - that'll be December, lol :rotfl:
Depending on what Mother Nature throws at us weather-wise, of course.
We're south-facing and got cavity wall insulation the other year, that made a big difference!0 -
We have just left CH radio thingy( sorry mind gone totally blank, old age showing itself) which totally controls the boiler unless we switch it off and even then its not fully off as it will still bring heat on at 5c at 18c and this week a few times heating has come on, so its obviously getting colder but due to heat kicking in I had not noticed until I felt hall radiator(cannot be turned off or down like the others) or bathroom towel rail which is left on fully all the time after hubby broke it a few times turning it up or down.
All other radiators are left on frost protection (5c) only an will only be put higher when it gets much colder. Last winter thanks to it being so mild we only raised the temp on CH to 20 about 4 times and they were cold and very windy days when even though house is now well insulated it seemed cold still go in, but am blowed where.
I am hoping the competition doesn't start again this year like last with people saying how cold it was in their homes and rooms were getting damp yet they would still not put heat on of any kind at all.
I know its expensive but letting your home get damp and cold is a sure way to health problems, maybe not that year or the next but eventually you will become really ill as it slowly undermines your immune system.
Even if you set up a flower pot heater it will bring some warmth into your home.Need to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

Still off but the wood burning stove has been put to work, especially as a confidential papers burner! We are clearing a lot of cupboard so there is a lot of paper to burn, it does not give loads of hear but takes the chill away and we intersperse it with a few wooden logs to increase heat.
Still hoping to make 1st November the earliest day for central heating, but it all depends on how the weather behaves, we don't want to be martyrs to the cause, if it gets freezing cold, bang, the CH is on!
Same for us. Wood burner on now and again and burning papers I'd normally shred. Also good for burning DH's tissues - loads at the moment 'cos he's got a stinking cold.
