I gave in last week for a couple of days as I had tonsilitis and didn't want to make it worse! But it's off again now and I am determined not to turn it back on until November (we managed to hold on last year).
Last night, it was about 15-16 degrees so I was in my dressing gown and with a blanket... Not very attractive but that's the price to pay!

We are 'lucky' - our heating broke down months ago and not had it fixed yet, otherwise it would have been on weeks ago and costing a small fortune ;) We are in a council house, so no prob to get it fixed, just that if it was working we'd be tooo tempted lol. We go round with jumpers, snazzy bed socks (£1 from Primark) and candles burning at night to give a 'warm feel'. I'm actually pondering the idea of asking if the council would open up the wall so we could use the old coal fire in there, but can guess the response lol
    skint but in luv :kisses2:

I have a similar problem to fedupfreda and haven't found any answers yet - have you?
I have been looking around for those little pots or some kind of granules that soak up moisture. (cant afford a dehumidifier) I can remember using them when I lived in a damp house once. But I can't find them anywhere - has anyone else seen them? I think they could be a good answer to condensation :D

Thanks to parsons wife for the info I've just found some here:http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Interior-dehumidifier-damp-condensation-caravans-silica_W0QQitemZ260281043804QQcmdZViewItem?ebay=68

but as I would rather save on postage I will check Wilkos out when next in town. :)
    Stop looking for answers....
The most you can hope for are clues.....:)

Ours is still off (even with 2 kiddies in the house). I can see the temp in both bedrooms and so far the lowest it has been is 18oc which is apparently ideal for children! We are having our boiler tested on 15 October so need to hold out until then really just in case. We are all wrapped up if I think its particularly cold but if it gets very cold or the kiddies are feeling cold then it can go on before the boiler testing. I cant even remember when it went on last year, probably around this time or before I should imagine.

We have no rads upatairs at the moment anyway. Downstairs is going on for an hour in the morning. I did light the stove on Friday though, and it's been either ticking over or burning brightly ever since...must get that briquette maker.

Hi KSH123, I just had a look at the e-bay link, and had a thought.... I've worked in various shops over the years, and most goods come in with silica packets in them to prevent moisture damage in transit. If you know anyone who works in a shop or even go into a shop and ask for some yourself, you'd get them free and hopefully do the job just as well ;) I'm going to ask for some for on our window ledges. Thanks for the inspiration :)

this is gonna sound daft, but I went to go and put the heating on, (as no amount of extra layers seems to work for me) but we'd run out of gas. so fiddled around with that to get it back on, and then it wasn't coming through anyway - gave up and pondered dinner - was going to be stirfry but chicken not defrosted - it's too cold, lol.

Grabbed a pack of cheapy noodles and stood at the pan for five minutes; served in a plastic picnic bowl which when I'm not typing - is keeping my hands lovely and warm & my mind off the fact that I can hear conversations almost word for word - over the road, without my windows open!

    Hiya Ness,

If you have a multi-fuel burning stove, try putting an ad on Freecycle uk.freecycle.org. I asked for ideas on how to get free logs and this was suggested. So far I have had two offers of free wood (ooooerrr missus ) so we've got the main room warm for nowt ;). The thread will be on Money Saving Old Style and i got some good suggestions thanks to some lovely folk:T.

Hope this helps, we use the cylindrical log maker for using up old newspapers and shredded paper etc., but it's not that great.

  • No heating on here yet, we are going to try for Nov 1st, it would be on by now if it wasn't for this thread!

I read my electric meter (no gas here) every week, so I know exactly ow much i use and every quarter I have to phone in a meter reading as it is never right, but saying that, I know exactly how much I use each week so make sure my DD covers it.

Dosn't anyone use hot water bottles to keep warm? we use them all the time, it is much better to keep yourself warm, rather than the room. And you can warm which ever bit you like!
