I'm always amazed at the temperatures some people consider normal. I've seen heating set to 25 and the like. And people talk of 18 as being freezing. 18 is a pretty normal temperature really.

We have to have the heating up a good whack to be able to feel any noticeable difference. Our council flat windows are badly fitted, though the council deny this after several inspections. We previously put bubble wrap and all sorts of insulation type stuff around the windows to little avail - except damp and condensation!

condensation means ventilation is needed. Open the windows or wipe with some loo roll.

can't open the windows it's too cold, and soon there will be more insulation efforts as we can't afford to keep putting the heating on.

i have seen it mentioned that cat litter helps to remove condensation. i have a little in my house, from cooking etc. when you put the tray of litter out where do you put them? i have little children so i need to hide them preferably the windowsil could be a problem!!!

    Any ideas please?

    Hi folks :hello:

Thanks to everyone who has suggested a solution to my condensation problem. I will try the cat litter and let you know how I get on. I think I will put it in odd socks - as I have 2 boys I have LOTS of odd socks so will help keep the sock monster under control!:D

Oooh it's been a gorgous sunny day today and quite mild. I was out all day and a light jacket was sufficient. A bit cool here in my flat, what with these massive north-facing windows, but I've put warm socks and my usual fleece on and am as warm as toast. I'm determined to hold out until 1st November.
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.
  • Hi

I gave in and put the heating on at the weekend, we had a real cold snap in the East of Scotland. Milder now though so the heating is back off again for as long as possible!

  • I am still determined not to put heating on yet. started wearing jumpersin evening and having a hot chocolate drink. Partner is always complaining, but i havent given in yet (he probably loves it when Im at work and Im suspicious he sneakily puts it on then) 2 teenagers havent complained yet. 4 year old woke in night a few days ago, just put an extra blanket on & he always has a hot water bottle to take to bed. o K now. i put his dressing gown on when he gets up until he gets dressed. when I was young we didnt have central heating, just 1 coal fire in living room, I think everyone has gone soft.

No fire or heating on yet and it isn`t any hardship at the moment as it is warm enough. I just put another layer on and/or use a fleece throw in the evening. Roll on more warm days as winter is going to be a lot shorter

it suddenly occured to me whilst sitting reading this little thread that I havent even tested my heating yet.

Ive had problems with the water cylinder in the cupboard so had that mended the otehr day - every time i ran a tap i thought the cupboard was about to explode - the noise was horrendous! so had that sorted.

Dont even know if the heating works i havent had it on since March!

Still determined to hold out till November though - it was nice here yesterday so am jsut off to check the weather reports as have lots of bedding to get dried (little one night training) so could do with a nice clear day today
    Time to find me again

I haven't checked mine either and ours is soooo old  . I know the hot water works as we use it through the year.

Oh well, fingers crossed it works when we need it

It's not too bad here at the moment, bit chilly but we just wrap up abit more. DH is onside so that helps.

    Hi Guys :hello:

I've been reading through this thread with interest, and I'm up for the challenge too!!

I haven't had my heating or fire on at all yet this year, and i'm determined it won't go on until 1st November at the earliest. It's not that we can't afford to put it on I just resent the price rises every quarter so far this year  There is so many other things i'd prefer to spend my money on frankly!

We have no little ones in the house, my DS is 15 and likes his bedroom to be cold anyway, so no complaints from him so far. My hubby is onside too and yesterday when i was freezing, I put my dressing gown over my clothes, put a scarf on, and he made me a hot water bottle :) Aww, now that's true love;)
