we dont have "proper" heating, only a gas fire in the lounge and a couple of electric heaters in a few other rooms...they are not being used this year..too blooming expensive

Odd thing .... I haven't yet felt cold enough to put the heating on even though I live in a fairly large, old draughty house with single glazing.

I think it's because I spent 18 months without a boiler during a renovation and simply "readjusted"

Boiler now out of action again, so just as well that I'm used to it

everyone but EVERYONE should be reading their meters on a regular basis so that they don`t get such a nasty shock when a read bill comes in. Too many people are living with their heads in the sand, every estimated bill says that the correct readings can be phoned in for an up to date bill.

Estimated bills if on the low side add up and wham people get hammered with a massive increase in the dd. What looks like a lower bill at the time is only delaying the inevitable

tbh it is also about taking personal responsibility

Very good point. BTW I have always found estimated readings to be hideously inaccurate, and even when the meter is read they can still get it wrong, mainly because round my way they tend to get the day and night readings mixed up (economy 7). You can imagine how I felt 2 years ago when we got a summertime electric bill for £644  (it would normally be about £50 for the same period). Ever since then I have watched the bills like a hawk. I even watch the meter readers to see they put the right information in their little machine - even though my meter has a sticker clearly displaying what times cheap rate applies  They must love me, but hey, I don't care! :D
SMILE....they will wonder what you are up to...........;)

We've had the heating on for brief periods. I would have liked to keep it off longer, but health issues suggest otherwise.

Despite the wind and rain today though, it's actually quite mild, so the heating hasn't needed to go on this morning. I think it will now be a case of taking each day as it comes, and only putting the heat on when necessary.

I dont get how people can just go 'yeah ok then' when they get an estimated bill and then suffer with the DD when it takes all of two minutes ot check and ring it in - with sw@lec when i ring through they can normally tell me over the phone what the bill adjustment is going to be and thankfully because of this we will be £147 in credit by the time the next gas bill comes in and only about £10 in credit on the next electric one.

My sister jsut reads a bill sees how much she has to pay and does it. she doesnt do meter readings is what she told em as its too awkward with two kids to find time to do it - i have to clamber into our spare room which could in honest hosue a few lost trekking crews because once your in it be damned if you can get out again in a hurry - jsut to read my gas meter and have to rearrange half my bedroom to read the electric one! but i saved myself £30 the last lot of readings i did! so its well worth doing if only for saving that little bit extra
Time to find me again
• Still no heating on here :)

For some reason our house seems warm ? Probably because i have spent the last 4-5 winters with no heating as my boiler broke and i couldnt afford to fix it. Sods law.... i get it fixed then prices for gas go through the roof :(

I am all ready for a cold spell though. Fleece bought to put over the leather sofa, they get soooo cold in winter.

Beds, well little 2's beds have their flanlette sheets on,along with extra quilt over matress. Not got round to doing others yet.

Yes, we have succumbed as well, and we are also suffering from condensation on double glazed windows, anyone got any ideas? I know the more up to date ones have trickle vents at the top but ours are at least 15 years old (before we moved in) and dont have any vents. I spent the first few minutes of this morning wiping the inside of the windows dry:eek:

I have a similar problem to fedupfreda and haven't found any answers yet - have you?
I have been looking around for those little pots or some kind of granules that soak up moisture. (cant afford a dehumidifier) I can remember using them when I lived in a damp house once. But I can't find them anywhere - has anyone else seen them? I think they could be a good answer to condensation :D
Stop looking for answers....

KSH, I think someone mentioned Wilkinsons or Lakeland for those granules.

• Our heating is set at 18 degrees in the morning and evening but is set low enough not to come on but high enough for pipes not to freeze (not really changed that since last winter!)
I've not actually put the heating on but this week has been the first week when the temp in the flat has dropped below 18 cos the heating comes on first thing in the morning and for a bit in the evening cos it's so cold!
We have big windows/balcony doors so we loose a lot of heat there (even with floor lengh curtains!) so we've usually to have the heating on at 20-22 degrees in winter just to stop the place being unbearably cold but we're going to hold off changing the setting for as long as possible!
