Well, after reading all of this thread I was intending to leave ours off until November but last night I changed my mind.

I didn't put the heating on but I told my husband that if need be it was going on.

We haven't had an increase in our bills for 3 years as we took out a fixed 5 year deal with British Gas in 2005.

They were more expensive than everyone else at the time as normal I suppose but my husband decided to bite the bullet and go for it. At least he would know roughly what the bills were going to be like.

OMG, what a good move that was!

We are going to be in for one hell of a shock in 2010 when it will rocket but I have decided to make the most of it if needed now.

I fixed my prices with British Gas and dread 2010 when my bills will go through the roof, but on the otherhand I've been making a concerted (sp?) effort to reduce my consumption to help try and offset the increased costs. (hope that makes sense!)
My gas direct debit has recently dropped to £25 per month from £30, but I'm still budgeting for £30 too.

PS I've not had the heating on since Saturday.;)

Dosn't anyone use hot water bottles to keep warm? we use them all the time, it is much better to keep yourself warm, rather than the room. And you can warm which ever bit you like!

Yes we do, all winter! In bed a half hour before we get in, and we take turns to move them around so when we get into bed all surfaces are nice and warm. Couldn't do without them!

Put the heating on for the first time last Friday.....then the boiler broke down. turned out it was a water pressure thing due to bleeding the radiators. Knew a 'very nice man' and got it fixed 'cheap'...nudge, nudge, wink, wink.

If it was just me I'd keep it off, but I have a nearly 2 year old about. In my defence I have the thermostat set at 17, so it doesn't often kick in....only when its really bad.

In the past I'd have bunged it on at a higher temp and forgotten about it. So I'm up at the moment. I think.

I have a similar problem to fedupfreda and haven't found any answers yet - have you?
I have been looking around for those little pots or some kind of granules that soak up moisture. (cant afford a dehumidifier) I can remember using them when I lived in a damp house once. But I can't find them anywhere - has anyone else seen them? I think they could be a good answer to condensation :D

Check out your local pound shop if you have one.The one's on ebay are from there,I know as I got several of the same ones from mine. They can be washed out and refilled. For refills Lakeland sell 2.5kg bags for £4.99.They last quite a while too.

Hi Everyone, this is my first post on this thread although ive been watching for a while.

im sat in my dressing gown, with socks on. just had a lovely warm/hot bath as a treat as i have a streaming cold at the mo. i did have the heating on two nights ago for an hour to take the damp and chill away, but i dont intend to put it on again for as long as possible. i have 2 little ones in the house, 3yrs and 1 yr. youngest is in a kiddies sleeping bag and 3year old loves her new (from freecycle) flanalette sheets!!

i wanted to ask. i have seen it mentioned that cat litter helps to remove condensation. i have a little in my house, from cooking etc. when you put the tray of litter out where do you put them? i have little children so i need to hide them preferably the windowsil could be a problem!!!

    Any ideas please?

    thanks fertyskids.

I'm always amazed at the temperatures some people consider normal. I've seen heating set to 25 and the like. And people talk of 18 as being freezing. 18 is a pretty normal temperature really.

Plenty of kids have grown up without central heating. If anything, it'd be good to not condition them to high temperatures.

condensation means ventilation is needed. Open the windows or wipe with some loo roll.
  • eeee it's 15C here but I got layers galore and the coffee is hot. I use the freebie newspapers to wipe the windows though. Loo roll is too precious.

Are you using lids on pans and reducing the temperature? Reduces energy consumption and condensation.
