Is your heating ON or OFF?

I've set my thermostat to 15 or 16, for the heating to come on about 10 mins before we get up. I've no idea how the heating works, but the thermostat is in the kitchen, which is the coldest room in the flat, so even on 15, the bedrooms, bathroom and lounge are nice and snug, while the kitchen is still an ice box.
I also stick it on for half an hour in the evenings, on my littlun's bath nights. (can't have her geting hypothermia!)
For me though, I think having the heating on is a psychological thing, since returning to college I have to get up at 5.30 in the morning, it's bad enough getting up in the dark, but the dark AND the cold is a bit too much to bear!
  • Poo -you have brought back memories , my sister and I both got 'babygrows' a few years ago zip up the middle with red with white cuffs looked like (giant) father christmas elves. They were fab I think they were from TJ Hughes - they always have unusual things in stock. That was ok when we were single living together ( both as daft as each other) but now weve grown up and have our own places with partners I dont know if we could get away with them now:eek: . Going to the front door - either hide behind the setee and dont go or throw on the dressing gown and pretend youve just had /just going to have a shower.

Must get new dressing gown to keep warm M & S mentioned as good but bit dear - has any one seen any cuddly warm ones not too expensive or as a bargain?

I got a lovely big fluffy hot pink dressing gown from Peacocks for a tenner.
Very warm and washes ok too.

Heating not on here in Devon yet despite the family asking me to put it on! :rotfl: I would love to hold out until November if possible because once it goes on it probably won't get turned off permanently until May.

We have a 3 year old house with a nice gas fire in the lounge but if we light it we can almost see the pound signs floating up the chimney! We wondered today if it's possible to get a woodburning stove put in instead? Does anyone know how we would go about this and the cost?

    It depends on your chimney.
You'll need a proffessional to come and have a look at it. To see if it's suitable for a wood burning stove. I would imagine it is, if it's already used for a gas fire now.
But I'd have it looked at by a pro just to make sure.
Is the chimney connection in your wall or in the ceiling? High up on the wall or in the ceiling is easiest as you then just stick the right size pipe in and away you go.

If your chimney is suitable it'll be a doddle.

Get your gas fire disconnected and the gas pipe sealed up. (I'd call in somebody who knows what they're doing for this sort of thing. Don't want a leaky pipe..)

Tell everybody you know that you are looking for a used wood burner and chances are one will turn up for you cheaply. You'll need to measure the diameter of the stove exit and the diameter of you chimney.. get the pipes to match.
You also need something to protect your floor from the heat of the woodburner and any embers that may fly out when you add wood once it's lit.

A wood burner will burn wood only.. a coal stove will burn wood and coal.. something to consider.. :D

So far so good at our house. I'm determined to last out till 1st November, or at least until the baby arrives- things will HAVE to be very diffferent then!!

We've got the draught excluders down and Im snuggled under the fleecey blanket at the moment with just one light on in the whole house :o

You betcha . If you're anything like me - I was always boiling when pregnant, in fact I've never been warm since. Good luck when the time comes, do you know what you're having?

    Love,
    U

Im in a wheelchair and my legs are always freezing. Had to put the central heating on this week but am on the lookout for some thermal leggings or long johns for females any ideas where to buy from please.

Hi, I'm off the wheels at present - hope it lasts ;), but can sympathise.

Matalan had some new stock in when I visited this week, but at present I am recycling old leggings and T-shirts.

I dare say like me you probably draw the line at Billy Connolly's 'Big Slipper' :o.

Peeing cats and dogs out there today, but it's not cold. I'm sitting here with all windows open to let in fresh air, wearing my usual fleece, and feel quite comfy.

I envy those of you with woodburning stoves. Nothing like it for warmth. I wish we could have one but alas, flat living and all that.

We've not had the c/h on yet and I think we should be able to leave it off til November with no problem. However the gas fire was on for a few hours yesterday and its getting very chilly in here again today. I usually pop it on around 5 pm and leave it til about 8 pm. I find when its dry and sunny outdoors, we need the heating much less. But boy, a couple of days and nights of wet weather and it feels very cold! That despite the fact we're in a new build.

We went round the place yesterday, checking for draughts and closing off any we found.

Had real incentive not to put the heating on this week. I have lost my gascard and British Gas charge 8 pounds for another one. Have kept really warm ransacking the house trying to find it. Am sure its in here somewhere.
Good reason to declutter as well. Found lots to put on ebay. As they say every cloud has a silver lining.

Ooooooooooooooooh it has got so cold but this year we have managed to hold off a bit longer than ever before as we have draftproofed the windows and put curtains (some of them double layer) up at the doors - its made a massive difference.

I have an oversize fleece jumper which I fling on in the evenings and that has made a difference.

I hate heating timers so ours is on constant, however, I only turn the thermostat up til it just clicks to take the chill off the house and then I turn it right back down to 10 again so I only use it when I absolutely have to.

Our energy bill online shows that we are using 9% less energy than this time last year :j :j :j

I adopt the same heating method as Frugal with the thermostat - seems to work and we're on target for using 1000 litres of oil this year.
