Is your heating ON or OFF?

We've caved in as well, but only had the heating on for a couple of short bursts.
Like another poster we use the boiler to heat the water all year round (30 mins to an hour a day) but it's at least 25 years old now and so we don't have a separate thermostat (other than the radiator ones)
Two of the radiator stats have broken off when they were switched on high and two of the radiators don't work at all! But that's nothing new  .
We'll hold out as long (hopefully oil prices will fall a bit more fingers crossed) as we can before the timer is set to bring the heating as well as the water on.....but it may not be long if we get dips in temperature like Friday night/Saturday morning - my car was white over and all the house windows had condensation yesterday morning (including the upvc ones!!).:wave:0 -
Caved in yesterday cos we have all got head colds and feeling rubbish. However today it is sooo mild again and we are all a little better that we have not put it on and even have had the windows open to let some fresh air in!!!
We have been looking into a woodburner for our lounge rather than our inefficient living flame gas fire - been to a couple of shops and they both said that the fires are in mega demand and although we could get the one we liked; the people to fit them are really scarce and booked up till Christmas.0 -
Does anyone know where I can get an adult fleecy 'babygow' for me and my sister so we dont have to put the heating on yet please
xxpoo
Aldi are selling fleecy blankets (200x100cm) for £4.99, I thought about buying two and sewing myself just what you describe, an adult babygrow! hehehe
It is cheaper to buy fleece like this rather than by the metre, it works out at £2.50 per metre, so I might just go and do that!
On the "holding out" note: still no central heating but the woodstove is on almost every night, it is good to take the chill out of the whole house. It helps that I do not like a very warm bedroom (I usually have the radiator off all winter in my bedroom). Also been using the oven to cook stuff so the kitchen gets warmed that way.
CaterinaFinally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
Oh well, circumstances have forced me to rethink holding out with the heating......Poorly ferret (she's terminal with cancer and has lost most of her fur) and she gave me a fright yesterday, as I thought it was 'that time'. Anyway, she's been kept snug in a pet carrier. Fed, watered and medicated, and appears to be perking up...So, the heating's going to be put on in short bursts to keep her warm:)0

I think a woodburner is the way to go for those qwho can do it. Google "stoves". My big coal fired one is a Charnwood and its magic, but you can get the wee woodburners quite cheaply. Not sure about fitting them though. You can have a stainless steel chimney if you fit it on an outside wall. Wouldnt that be one in the eye for the gas company executives, if we all did that !0

No but I did bring down the electric heater and put it on 3 times yesterday each for 5 mins.
That helped keep the room a bit warmer.
Will do a trial run on the CH tomorrow when I can call in my boiler people just in case something goes wrong :rotfl:
But will try and keep it off as long as possible. Husband has thermal t-shirts and long johns to keep the cold out.
Yours

My flat has 2 fans that go directly outside, so Im freezing! Not putting the heating on yet, we dont use the hot water for anything other than washing up and the occasional bath, everything else is electric. We are trying to have the smallest gas bill possible.
Heating goes on in November I cant wait!0 -
Poo -you have brought back memories , my sister and I both got 'babygrows' a few years ago zip up the middle with red with white cuffs looked like (giant) father christmas elves. They were fab I think they were from TJ Hughes - they always have unusual things in stock. That was ok when we were single living together ( both as daft as each other) but now weve grown up and have our own places with partners I dont know if we could get away with them now:eek: . Going to the front door - either hide behind the setee and dont go or throw on the dressing gown and pretend youve just had /just going to have a shower.
Must get new dressing gown to keep warm M & S mentioned as good but bit dear - has any one seen any cuddly warm ones not too expensive or as a bargain?0
