Heating not on here in Devon yet despite the family asking me to put it on! :rotfl: I would love to hold out until November if possible because once it goes on it probably won't get turned off permanently until May.

We have a 3 year old house with a nice gas fire in the lounge but if we light it we can almost see the pound signs floating up the chimney! We wondered today if it's possible to get a woodburning stove put in instead? Does anyone know how we would go about this and the cost?

OH is still in his tee shirt and I've my fleece and umpteen layers on! ~Knew I felt the cold but this seems ridiculous!

Cannot wait until they instal the cavity wall insulation here, am hoping that'll take the ice from the room lol. Even looked at Damart for thermal undies

I refuse to put mine on until November.

I could really afford to if I wanted to, but I object in principle and I'm going to hold out as long as possible. 1st November is the absolute minimum, hoopefully later. And it won't be used after the end of Feb either.

I have plenty of jumpers and warm clothes. It's easy really.

Mine's not on. Yet. Flipping freezing here today though and I've been stood on the touchline at Rugby all afternoon.,....many more saturdays like this and my "1st November" determination will be fading! One thing we have thought this year is that we may not bother heating the spare room on a regular basis - might well just close the door on it and save the running cost of the storage heater in here. The only thing I'm not sure on is how much that heater helps keep the rest of this end of the flat warm.....

...the thought does cross my mind occasionally that everyone will have turned into such miserable little bodies huddled up in duvets/fleeces/et al and barely moving a muscle wishing they were warmer - that it keeps us off the street and away from protesting about all this.

i was thinking much the same! its shameful that in the 6th richest country in the world, tens of thousands of people die of cold every year, and the government won't pay for a really decent programme of home insulation for EVERYONE (not just people on benefits/those that can afford to pay half the cost). This could be paid for from a tax on the energy companies (and regulate them properly like they do in Europe so they can't just pass the costs on to us).

on a immediately practical note i also agree that getting out the house, whether to wave a placard as ceridwen suggests, or just to do something sociable, is a good way of saving fuel! i spent the afternoon learning to make chutney at the local environmental centre which was rather lovely (and nice and warm over the stove!).

    errr....nope.

But one leetle thought - one couldnt answer the door in an adult babygro - well I couldnt anyways:o

An alternative would be a fleece dressing gown worn over one's other clothes indoors. I do that - helps a lot at keeping me warm - but I can whip it off instantly the doorbell goes and hide it outasight before answering the door. If its a visitor for me - rather than just one of those anonymous assorted callers one gets - then the sitting room fire goes on quick to warm them up and I'll put the dressing gown back on again when they've gone.

(Note: Marks & Spencers has just got some winter coloured ones - and they're luverly. Dont know where else would have them at a reasonable price.)

well sort of no, the central heating [ OIL] is still off but the wood burning stoves are lit.

Me as well but I only have one woodburner which I light about 5pm as it takes about an hour to warm the room right through.
Until then it's throws and cats so I'm cosy.

TBH I live in the kitchen mostly as I have an oil fired Rayburn.
