  • just a quick question I have a combe boiler. is it ok to have it on just for half an hour a couple of time in the day than a full hour? does it cost more if its only on for short blasts? hate to sound thick here
  • I have asked elsewhere but thought the OS'ers would know for sure. We have a gas fire in main living area fireplace, and a very dodgy combi boiler that needs replacing.

My question cheaper to put gas fire on when we are all in one room or turn heating on for whole house ?

Advice really appreciated as Southern electric has advised 29.2% increase !!!!

we have no fires, only ch and felt quite warm without it again last night. Having the lounge door shut and tv on, while crocheting a lap quilt, makes a difference. Any warmer and I would start dozing in the chair. I think that damp is the decisive thing for most people and yesterday morning, outside damp was running down the outside of my n facing door. Damp is much worse and more dangerous to well being than pure cold, so temperature should not be the only factor

I've had a friend on the phone in tears this morning. She's just found out her DD was hiked by 50% and she simply can't afford it. She's done the switching etc..., isn't wasteful and is like so many of us ie: ineligible for any sort of benefit money to help out. I didn't know what to tell her. This is fricken outrageous.

Our gas DD has gone up 120%!!!! And we were not in the red either!

Really bad isn't it? I'm trying not to think about it too much.

Well in this case, my friend can't "not think about it". She's facing the proverbial "heat or eat" dilemma now. Its f*cking disgraceful.

my electric DD has doubled whereas i am very very near to being in credit with my gas - I pay £50 a month for it by DD (i get quarterly bills) and all i owed on this new bill i had last week was £8 (jsut under) so i will be £140 in credit (thank god!) but my electric i was paying minimal on £15 but that has gone up to £30 a month now. - ok so i know it wont seem a fortune to some of you but to us its quite alot as between me and bf we dont earn alot as it is.

not sure where else to make savings to be able to put tha tmoney towards the electric. If anythign i need to be in credit with gas so i know i can have it on when i eventually need it with a 4 year old who seems to have a constant chest infectio, an asthmatic bf, the dog (see pets board) and our 8 year old step son - they all feel the cold quite badly. plus our flat is council so therefore damp ridden so need it really
    Time to find me again

So is your language. You obviously feel strongly about it but is that absolutely necessary on an internet forum?
Life is too short to waste a minute of it complaining about bad luck. Find joy in the simple things, show your love for those around you and be grateful for all that you have. :)

I agree with you! Absolutely no need to get like that!

When I say I try not to think about it, it is because we are worried sick! Believe me, I cried to when the second price hike fell through our door and DH went off on one about it (in the same kind of way you are).

We have not put any heating on and I can't see us doing so in the near future so I guess we are all making tough decisions based on the current situation.

Is you friend earning? If you post some details, someone may have some suggestion for her.
