Does anyone know the minimum temp you can have the heating on, to prevent pipes freezing?

Internal pipes are unlikely to freeze unless there is a prolonged extreme cold spell similar to the last couple of winters. Even then they should be fine if you maintain an internal room temp above 5C. The pipes that are most likely to suffer will be those in the loft space or any outside taps. The best prevention is to ensure that these are sufficiently lagged and try to maintain regular water flow if possible.

Thank you. I've always had my heating on, because I thought you had to have it on all the time in winter because otherwise your pipes would freeze! :o

  • Crikey! I wouldn't want to see your winter heating bill. Just turn the thermostat down to 5 degrees at night or when you're going out.

About the paperless billing: British Gas send you an email when they either need a meter-reading from you or have issued a bill. And a reminder if it's not been paid. This should be fine unless you determinedly never read your emails.

I've got a cold and a sore throat and house feels freezing due to the dreadfully high winds so CH is on as well as me wearing loads of layers.

We got back from holiday yesterday and it's been firmly on since then.

Been on 14 all day and up to 15 tonight.

That's it for this year, see you all next autumn.

Off again, but using the electric blanket for me and dog's have their lamp on.

This condensation business REALLY onfuses me. no woodburner today or yesterday and no condensation. In fact, today the air in the house feels a litle too dry, lol.

That's because it hasn't been as cold overnight.

It's 12C here today so I've opened the windows a little to air the house and let the heat in :p

    Thanks. :)

I'll start checking temps when I first get up and very last thing, it hasn't been as cold as the coldest day certainly but we've had condensation at warmer late evening and later morning temperatures already this year!
