We have our thermostat at 18 - cannot change it no matter how often we try and follow the instructions to reset it - can put it up or down but at certain times throughout the day it goes back to 18, we have only had it 2 1/2 years up so its not old just us being to thick to understand the instructions were you have to read with a magnifying glass, I kid you not on a pull down thing on thermostat itself. I know I could get engineer out to sort it but on the whole happy to leave it as means if it really gets cold during the night or if I am out heat will come on for dogs and so its been coming on and going off all week, sometimes for a few minutes other times longer, we have no other heat we use apart from the CH ( do have back up of gas fire, calor gas fire and if all else fails coal to put in fireplaces) but so far we have been warm enough on the whole - although DH complains when he says he is chilly and I insist he puts on a fleece rather than turn the thermostat up.
One thing I have noticed already just how much the price rise of gas is costing, we are on PAYG. went on that many, many years ago as hubby was being paid daily (taxi driver) and we were scared of getting big bills and since then just got used to it and never been without, but it does make me see with having to buy gas and electric weekly how much the rise really was - when you get it as a % its not easy to translate into money. Usually when its really cold we up the thermostat to 20 ( which it stays at until the preset times) and put it back up if need be, but this year think I will be just layering up more and leaving it at 18 as I think cost will be to much otherwise as our income has gone down past few years and likely to go down further in next month or so. Usually the increases don't make that much difference weekly but this last one certainly has and heating not come on that much, certainly not daily, The CH does cost much less to warm the house than the gas fire does - and that only really warmed one room, whereas CH main radiator in the hall warms upstairs nicely except the coldest of days, so all other radiators stay on frost protection except living room.
We have for years always left the back door open a bit so dogs can go in and out when they want, but as we noticed this week heating was coming on because of this we are going to have to try and retrain the dogs - not easy as they are 13/14 to ask to go out, something they have never had to do, that and keep some newspaper down by back door in case of accidents.Need to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

We had it on at 6 this morning turned it off at 8 ish, went out did some shopping etc, and iy really turned so cold within half hour, so ended up with car heater on full until we got home then put the heating straight on, within 15 mins a lovely toasty house .................
And the weather forcast has been saying all week that it will be 14 degrees, I dont know what happened today but it was nowhere near 14.......................If it keep this cold then the heating will be on during the day.............
Perhaps because weve had weeks of warm weather and we felt it when it suddenly turned cold today.......0 -
Mine's only been on for an hour a day all week - not at all in the morning and on briefly at 6ish when its dark - this seems to be enough so far but it does feel more chilly out today.
Its supposed to be mild this weekend but its not boding well so far.
My heating use is much less than previously though - I was a Tshirt and no socks kind of gal before trying to economise this winter:o0 -
Yesterday evening was so mild I was doing some garden tasks in a tshirt. This morning the temperature was good, but the wind chill was significant, and this evening I have lit the woodburner which will stay on for a couple of hours. I'm dead on my feet today and am worried I'll fall asleep in the warmth before bed time...just incase I've set an alarm for later!0

It's unbeleiveably mild for the time of year, last night I slept nekkid - !!- and was too hot still then so kicked off duvet in the night - today I am sitting in just a tshirt and am lovely and comfortable
long may this continue and I hope it's not a sign of a harsh winter...
Trying very hard to be frugal and OS - just plodding on and doing my best!

Still off here.Good drying today i got two lines dry in the blowey weather,it does seem a bit chilly now,the house felt warm when i returned from walking dogs but the temps seem to have droped.Lets hope it dosn't start getting really cold anytime soon.I've let me two little poodles coats grow thick to keep them warm, the dog we adopted last week had been outside in a kennel so the house must seem nice and warm to her.0

Suddenly the house feels really cold, so it is going on NOW! in the next five minutes, after I have finished typing this. For an hour only, though! Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0

My heating has been on, but I've come on to say I have a dehumidifier :j:j:j I should never have got DH involved, he had to research, compare and generally get in the way :rotfl:
But the decision was made, and today I have felt the benefit. Despite rain in the air all day so no outdoor drying, several washloads have dried on the airers with the dehumidifier. I'm a complete convert
No condensation anywhere at all. It's brilliant
It's turned milder again this evening so the heating has clicked off again. I shall be ironing tonight, (that's the downside of getting all this washing dry) so the thermostat will be turned further down as I shall be quite hot enough
You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -
