i got a cold now. first sign was last night at work with a horrible sore throat, and this morning woke up feeling all bunged-up with nose-dripping. i've tanked myself up with all the flu pills, vits etc, and i hope it'll go away soon. i can't afford to take time off work as we have a penalty system for sick days.. it's horrid getting ill. i know that having the house unheated doesn't help, but i don't want to increase our outgoings.
It doesn't matter what temp the house is so much, it's the person that matters, LIR's advice is good. A lower temp can contribute to catching colds, but a cold isn't going to kill you. Hypothermia will.
if you remember my replies to this thread from last winter, i didn't have the heating on v. much. in fact probably about 10 days at about an hour each time. i know.. i'm crazy, but this is one way of saving a few hundred pounds (got my refund back from the gas board only a few months ago). maybe i am being a martyr to the ultimate MSE ways, but it's only when it's absolutely cold like minus 10 or something. are any of you lot think along the same lines, or am i being too pig-headed about this???!
How did you possibly manage to get away with 10 days at an hour a time last year? I would have said that's impossible. What temp was your house last year?

The stat has just clicked the heating on here to take the edge off a bit, it doesn`t feel cold though just damp and miserable, its cloudy here and was a bit foggy earlier and i hate this kind of weather when it never seems to really get light all day.

I have washing hung up all over the rads so i`m hoping that this starts to dry soon. How i miss being able to put it all on the airer in the spare room!

The plaster is drying out nicely though which is a bonus so i`m hoping that the first coat of paint will go on in just over a week and then we can get cracking with the woodwork etc

I can vouch for the fact that going out for a walk then coming in makes the house feel warm even without heating. Especially if you get caught in a downpour like I did and have to walk back in jeans which weigh an extra couple of pounds because of the rain!
  • Had to give in a couple of days ago!
It is now on for an hour in the morning, so its warm when I get up, especially needed as our bathroom is FREEZING! :D
It also comes on for an hour in the evening after I get in from work. Once I'm in, we batten down the hatches and preserve every last iota of warmth. That plus the warmth from cooking dinner and we are comfortable. I always let the oven kick out the heat into the kitchen after I have finished cooking which must help a little too.

Good idea! Tonight I plan to go for a little run after work, and then I'm leading a pole dancing lesson in my room which should keep us all warm for a while ;)

    I've been Money Tipped!
exercise helps, as does vigourous housework and also the ironing. Winter is brilliant for flyladies wanting to up the ante with housework and keep warm.

Lotus, while I concurr re being cold and having colds I don't think its wise to push the body too hard during illness. Postviral things, for example, are terrible....and for the sake of taking extra care of yourself for a weekish I think its worth looking at making it easier for the body to get healthy by cutting down on extra work and scaling up on comfort and nutrition.
  • our radiaitors is on 3 out of seven days a week due to drying clothes otherwise it wouldnt be on depending on what it is like on a weekend weather wise. we do all our washing on a weekend but if the weathers crappy sundays washing sometimes has to wait until monday to be dried. on a night we just snuggle up under blankets and the heating from the cooking helps aswel when we first get in.
  • Put mine on for an hour twice a day for two days after we'd been away over the weekend. With cooking, etc. now its back up to warm enough so I've turned it off again. Its still chilly, but blankets, hot water bottles, slippers and today my dressing gown over my clothes is helping. I've got to be honest, I'm just being stubborn. I want the energy companies to get the message that there is a price I won't pay! I know a lot of people don't have a choice, and I certainly can't afford the usage I had last year but I'm fairly young, fit and healthy so I'm stubbornly holding on.

OH and I tend to get lots of colds as we both teach Uni undergrads (who are renowed for their less than ideal hygeine, sharing drinks, and passing on colds!). If either of us gets really bad, I'll put it on primarily for comfort. We've only had one so far and it wasn't too bad.

Caring employer NOT! How I used to hate it when people struggled in feeling like death and you just knew you were going to be the next in line...
  • I take back what I said about setting the timer up. Turned it off again.
