Is your heating ON or OFF?

nobodyspecial wrote: »No offence intended FW, but the title of the thread is "Is your heating on or off?" not "are you paying for heating?" I think lots of people on here are having a competition with themselves and others as to who can last the longest without putting any heat source on. Now apart from the fact that the property style, insulation levels, aspect ( free solar gain from south or west facing windows ) etc etc will have an impact on inside temperatures, some are saying things like "I'm not even thinking about putting the heating on" but if they're lighting fires etc then they DO have heating on. That's a bit of a slap in the face for the poor soul shivering in a totally unheated place, who wonders how others can cope with temperatures they can't. Perhaps people should be posting "yes I have a roaring fire tonight because it's cold but it's not costing me a bean because the coal, wood, etc was all free"
Anyway just my take, and hope I haven't upset you. It's a shame for most that only have two options, freeze or pay for heating..........I'm sure we'd all love a bit of free heat
This time last year it seemed like a competition who could survive the longest without heat, some saying theyd get loads of layers on, ice in the air, too cold too move etc etc,bot no way would they put the heating on, each week they were trying to get another week without turning the heating on, I put a thread up saying by not having the heating on for a few days they were not saving that much probaly only a tenner or similar, and that no way would I have my house cold to save a few pound.....
My home temp is normally 22 degrees, my heating is on from 6 AM to 8 PM, I have a disabled hubby who sits all day and need heat, and I wouldnt risk his health or mine by not putting the heating on, I always say theres a little something that you can cut back on so that you can have the heating on.....Its a must to keep warm and comfortable in your own home, not only for yourself but your home needs heat too to stop damp etc esulting in ill health.........0 -

shergar, I was one of those last year, and will be again this year. This year for me there is little choice in it, just as for last year there are some. For you, understandably, heating is an important priority and I'm glad you are both cosy, for some others things have been shaved where they can and/or priorities set elsewhere and there is no where else to cut back. My inefficent heating last year used to cost A LOT more than £10 a week when on even though I was freezing...so heating isn't necessary as economic for everybody sadly.0 -
Yes LIR it was a year ago that we all had the same discussions about heating..!, I do totally understand where you are coming from with your heating and affording it, Ive given up so much in the last couple of years so that we can have the heating on, like no smoking.! phew that was hard but done it, dont drink, dont buy xmas/birthday presents........run a old car, all the moneysaving tips on here helps out a lot too, as you know everyone are feeling the pinch, glad its not too cold November so far, did have the heating on today as it was cold all day, but weather forcast say it will reach 14 nearly all week , so its definately not like it was outside this time last year......dam cold and frosty and snow ..............
Every year the energy experts say the same old thing , get your loft insulated, get your draughproofing done,I think most of us done all those measures years ago,all we need now are for the energy prices to fall............
I really feel for all the oil central heating people, god that stuff go up to stupid prices, id be in trouble if id got to find that kind of money up front to fill a tank..............and a lot of people were in trouble last years prices and the availability of getting the oil delivered.........0 -
This is my 3rd year of heating off...again.
Luckily, it's been quite mild autumn so far. It looks like it's gonna start to get cold this week though. Wearing a pair of gloves, fleecy jacket and fleecy thrown over my legs as I write.Money is not the root of all evil.
It depends on how you obtain it and how you use it.
Have you sold your soul to the devil?0 -

exactly.I'm glad we can see each others POV.
I don't know how much it would cost to fill our oil tank this year...I'm guessing in the region of £1k. Then, we would have needed a new oil boiler too. We've been given permission to install a wood pellet boiler here in the wreck, but, with the other necessary works that will be £33k. When the dog broke her leg we knew that this year it was going to be tough. My dh has been relocated overseas, so we are paying rent for unused accomodation in London and travel for him to get home that we didn't expect this wointer too.
I don't smoke, don't drink very much at all (in fact, I abstain at least 3 months a year and about 2-3 units a week the rest of the year at most.....although this is anon abstinant month and the only alcohol I've used is in food, and not mush of that. My groceries are incredibly minimal, our car is also ancient and barely used. BUT we do have other significant expences, some by choice and some not. e.g. a memebr of my family has cancer. They are a single parent of teens and costs have still had to be met and we have gladly taken a responsibility there, then more expected the costs of the pets and the business start up this last year and trying to fix the wreck up to be habitable properly soon!
TBH, my dogs leg, my family's solvency during cancer recovery all take precidence over my boiler to me. If that means moaning about being in hundreds of layers and being too cold to move I don't think that's the worst crime in the world so I forgive myself:o0 -

on-off-on-off-on-off-on-off:D
Tend to have it on through the night rather than the daytime, and set quite a bit lower than I usually would. If it was just me here it would hardly be on at all, always used to really feel the cold but found I'm fine with a jumper on so far this year...
But DD1 moans incessantly that it's cold, and DS does have asthma, so for a quiet life it's worth putting it on, for me anyway:)0 -
Mine's still off and it's still quite warm. Although it's probably picking up some of the heat from the pets.0

Us too, still off though I have had to put on socks for the first time tonightNow thanks to Tommix & Queen Bear, now Lady Westy of Woodpecker0

On, its one degree outside here, i had to spend quite a while warming up the car before i set off home from work
It feels bitter outside so i`m very glad to get my thick bedsocks and fleecy dressing gown on and get warm. I wore my thermals at work tonight and i`m so glad that i did.
Did anyone get the totes toasties from @mazon when they were on offer at 3 for £10? I did and i`m wearing them as socks in my work boots and they are fab, i had put one pair aside for a stocking filler for Dsis but i may just have to pinch them myself as they are sooo warm.
DH reckons that this will be the coldest night this week and then it will warm up a bit - hope he`s right!
SDPlanning on starting the GC again soon0
