'Tis OK I'm keeping warm, nicely assisted by smiling at those who aren't using the heating because they've lit the woodburner, coalfire, logburner, halogen heaters, electric fire, gasfire etc etc When will people realise that anything that produces heat is heating?
I'm not suggesting for ONE MOMENT that people shouldn't heat their house, far from it, it is right to be concerned if people are holding out when they need it and can provide it, but I am suggesting that its tough on people on the thread who have no choice when people sday I'm fine with no heating...when they do have a heat source!
some are saying things like "I'm not even thinking about putting the heating on" but if they're lighting fires etc then they DO have heating on. That's a bit of a slap in the face for the poor soul shivering in a totally unheated place, who wonders how others can cope with temperatures they can't. Perhaps people should be posting "yes I have a roaring fire tonight because it's cold but it's not costing me a bean because the coal, wood, etc was all free"

I agree with all of the above ..... I'm afraid I too would count an open fire / log burner etc as heating whether it's free fuel that's used in this.

At my last house, an open fire was our ownly source of heat and it was on from around early September as the house was so cold - so if this type of "heating" doesn't count as we're not paying a utility company, then no-one in that situation would have heating on all winter, and that's not a true statement and IMHO a slap in the face for those who genuinely have no source of heating.

As for me - well, I put the heating on for 1/2 an hour yesterday. Not because I was cold but like Lostinrates the house felt really damp due to it being foggy and raining outside all day.

However, it is off again today:) even though it's a slightly chilly 6 deg outside (I have my scarf on as we chat - although my hands could def do with a warm up .... cup of tea I think!)

Our heating is off. We have a wood/smokeless coal burner that once lit, heats up the radiators. OH swept the chimney earlier this week, so it is ready to go, but it hasn't felt cold enough in the living room yet to warrant lighting it. We do also have a halogen heater, but the tubes need replacing. I was going to order some replacements online, but they seem quite expensive, so I haven't ordered them yet.

I have now resorted to wearing my winter dressing gown and snuggling under a blanket in the evening if I am just watching TV! I am happy to have made it to November without needing to have heating on, and every day we don't need to light it is a bonus.

I am however having trouble drying washing indoors if I can't put it outside due to rain. It is taking at least two days to dry an airer full and I often resort to putting clothes individually on coathangers and hanging them on all available door handles! I am looking forward to lighting the fire just in terms of clothes drying times!

    Ours is off again,

i did have it on earlier this morning to help dry some washing on the radiators which is now mostly dry but thats caused a lot of condensation so i`ve had the windows open all afternoon whilst i`ve been in. The dehumidifier is whirring away upstairs and the plaster looks dryer now in places. Wish it would hurry lol as i want to move the machine out of that room so that everywhere else will benefit.

May click it on for an hour later but i shall wait and see. Lots of fireworks here tonight, i like to see them now that we have animals that arn`t bothered by them but i can`t help feeling that its a waste of money, it really is seeing it go up in smoke but many peeps can`t be that hard up as they are soooo expensive and there was a huge queue at the firework counter in the supermarket earlier.

    I need one.

The kitchen and dining room certainly feel not ''damp'' but not ''dry'' either....ATM the woodburner is still on and the door open between sitting and dinng room in oorder to try and dry that out a little.

The other good news is that we had a look and can't see any bats so I can finally get some loft insulation. How to do that to top up the grant amount most cheaply I do not know....but I think it will make a difference.

I am grateful for tips on here in order to manage without having it on, Things are tight here, not having to find £20 this week for gas has been a small worry lifted, have just over £19 on the meter, if we need it on in the next week i will have to, if we can carry on until it gets colder even better

Ours is off. It's been very mild today and we didn't need coats when we were out. It's got a bit chilly now the sun's gone, so we'll need coats for the fireworks display. We don't need the heating yet though.

  • Still coping without, but I am burning cash using the tumble dryer. I daren't let the house get damp as there were apparently previous problems (now all fixed according to letting agent).

I was going to splash out on a hot water bottle, but have been inspired by someone's comments just to heat up one of my cast iron pans and wrap it in a towel. Hopefully I won't wake up smelling slightly of bacon!!

i have had mine on now and again as we have sometimes been cold, have had it on for an hour this afternoon and an hour tonight to dry the washing. I did manage to dry some on the line but had too much to get it out early when it was a bit sunny.

I am trying to not use it too much yet but I dont see the point in sitting in the cold unless you have to.

I only have gas heating, a fire and radiators and was told that it costs about the same for the heating as to run the gas fire but dont know how right that is
