  • saw on the news that 27000 people die each winter because of the cold. That is a shocking number. For those of us extreme moneysaving or with insufficient heating systems we really must all take very good care of ourselves and be prudent.

I have a tumble dryer for the first time now....last winter in the extreme weeks I just didn't do washing and as a result had a huge mountain that it was a nightmare to get through after the extreme weather broke, because the weather wasn't helping. I bought a cheap tumble dryer and decided for my planned usasage spending more for lower running cost wasn't merirted because it really will be an occasional use appliance...most things I can get dry under the veranda on a rack in most weather.

When I was a child a lady who lived near us didn't do any washing at all, all winter! It just piled up in the corner until the summer and she washed it all at once then. Mind you there was junk and clothes everywhere. They couldn't have a bath because the bath was full of clutter.

Heating been on a week now. Mind you only got two of my storage heaters on. House is warm enough and hope to last a fair few weeks at this level.

We put the heating on when we came back from a walk with the dogs just after 4.00pm. It is very chilly outside right now, so we have decided to pop it on for a few hours. I think all considered we have done really well getting to November and hardly having to use the heating.

Last year I recall we had the heating on in October as we had the boiler changed for a new one and the week that they were installing it, it was flipping cold we just had to rely on the burner for heat!

Still had nothing on, which is very good as my central heating isn't being installed until next week.

Looking at the weather forecast I should be able to last until next week. I don't want to have to get my old electric heater out of the shed just for one weeks use.

Currently 18.5C inside, and 9C outside.
  • Nope still none on.

The OH wants to try and make it to December this year. I can't see that happening but I'm willing to give it a go.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
  • 15 deg inside, have decided to put it all on for a test run - last thing I want to do is hold out until December then realise I need to ring the letting agent for repairs....

I've just read Goodnight Mr Tom, and Willie was "sewn in" for the winter!

You'd need to have a lot of clothes to keep them over winter.

There are some local authority flats in Douglas where, until very recently (at least I think they've been done up in the past couple of years) where they had coal fires, and the only place to keep the coal was in the bath

Has been very mild here again today, so no heating needed here. Went for a lovely walk along the beach, bracing wind but sunny.
