Re this Accuweather - the real feel is that with windchill? For us it says actual temp tonight 0C and real feel is -7C

Try netweather 10 day forecast, gives you 'feel like' temperatures, takes into account wind, rain, and should we see any, sun!

The type of boiler system that we have means that if you have the hot water on, you have to have the central heating on too.

The way around this of course is to go around the house and turn all of the radiators off.

I did ask a gas engineer about this a couple of years ago and he said there was no way around it.

Anyway, we had to get an engineer out the other day as a few of the radiator dials were either stuck or not working, I happened to mention the system to him.

We found out that you can have the water on without the radiators.

He showed me two wheels connected to the pipes up in the loft, one white and one red.

The white one turns off the water, the red the radiators.

We just go around in summer turning the radiators off but the fact that you can turn it off in the loft may be of use to anyone who wasn't aware.

The other way to turn off your radiators and just have the hot water on is by using thermostatic radiator valves on every radiator. You can also regulate which radiators from each room you want on.. i.e. the bedroom one off and the downstairs ones on thermostat 3.. :D

We've also not put our heating on yet - it's 15 degs outside and 19 degs inside. If the cold weather comes as they are forecasting then I might just have to put one rad on in the living room... :D But I am holding out for as long as possible..

  • What is everyone's "cut off" for indoor temps?
Just curious; I'm down to around 16deg now but only got to the "put on a jumper" stage. Hoping to hold out as long as possible! My weakness is showering in a cold bathroom though...just can't cope :O

  • with rain on and off most if day and washing basket over filled to point its falling out i gave in and put heating on not to keep warm just too get the washing dry managedto do 4 loads 3 are dry 1 more to go on rads but i had to turn it off i was way too warm by 6 oclock might put the rest on atrer in hall by rad its small and set the thermostat to 16 so it will only be on if its cold enough i've still got another 3 loads to do tomorrow i'm hoping it will be dry so can use the line
Why is it we end up using the heating to get clothes dry cos we need them to keep warm so we don't need the heating on ?

  • Been cold occasionally this month, so have had the heating on about three times so far - but only for half days at the most.

So far, I don't think I've used as much as I did last year when I'm sure it was much colder! Have been good and entered my meter readings very regulary, so my provider can hurry up and lower my direct debts...I can only hope! :rotfl:
  • Its still off here but I do think it can go on sooner rather than later. Would like to hold out until 1st November but if the temp/wind chill goes much lower then it can go on.

Our bedroom temp actually went under 20oc last night which is the first time since I can recall since around April/May time. Downstairs its around 17oc at the moment. Was very cold in the night when I got up to feed baby (with high wind and torrential rain). Once we were all up properly this morning and moving around it wasnt so bad.

The germs are going around at school, pre-school and work so I am sure we will all be coming down with one thing or another and snuggling under the blanket might not be enough!

It depends. When I'm feeling ill and bed or sofa bound 16 feels chilly, so need lots of covers....days like today when I'm well and rushing about its a pleasant working temperature! If its wet and I need to do things like clean floors or dry dogs and keep them warm then its different IMO.

Its 13 degrees in my kitchen now. I just made a cup of tea there. I'm wearing tracksuit trousers an a cashmere jumper, slippers (in the house) and I'm fine. My hands are cold, but they often are. The sun is out and its a beautiful day. My sitting room is certainly a little warmer, not sure how much though. :)

I put the electric blanket on for 20 mins or so last night to get the bed toasty.

edit: I expect my housesitter to be using the woodburner this month while I'm away for a few days. I'm hoping to hold out for the weekend after next before getting into a woodburner routine

16 - 18 degrees is usually enough to make my house cosy but not like a greenhouse. Last winter the thermostat was upped to 20 - 22 degrees in the coldest spells.

One of my friends runs her heating at 25 degrees no matter what the the weather is like and then moans about her heating bills!
