I am aiming to keep the central heating off as long as possible, at least until December. Will light one fore only in one room until then and then only if temp drops below 17 degrees in the day inside. My horses are still out 24/7 but are going nice and furry and fluffy. I've just come in from checking on them. Going dark way too early now. Does anyone know when the clocks go back BTW?

Isn't it usually the last Sunday in October?

Still off but no sacrifice as here in London the temperature has been quite mild for the time of the year. I am holding out for 1st November. Would go longer but always facing protests from other family members so in the end I know I shall cave in rather than hear all the whinging from them!
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

Still off here but I did have it on a for an hour yesterday to warm the dog up as he was all stiff and cold after a night in the kennels.
Not on today yet but its not dark here yet - we'll see...... Am desperately trying to hold out until the clocks change in just under 2 weeks but I won't be uncomfortable, if teh predicted cold snap comes it'll go on.

    HI everyone

I've been reading over my posts on this thread from the last 2 winters and am hoping to do the same and keep my gas central heating off till November. I made it to the 10th in the past - will have to see how it goes weather-wise!

I did have my open fire lit though around this time when the evenings got chilly. But now I have given it such a thorough cleaning and have stuffed pillows up to stop the draught that I don't want to use it. So I have plugged in the electric oil-filled radiator this evening as I was feeling a chill. According to Accuweather it is 5C outside (that's the coldest we've had so far) and it's 17C inside, has been quite warm inside with the sun streaming in but the last hour or so I feel chilly. I am strictly rationing the electric heater as on half power it's 15c/hr to run. When the weather was very bad last winter I had the gas heating on almost non-stop and the only way I could afford that was to keep it turned off till November - so fingers crossed I manage again this year.

It's set to get down to 2C tonight and I haven't yet got my flannel sheets on but I will be taking a hot water bottle and wheat bag to bed tonight and already have fleece blankets and PJs on the go.

Hope everyone is staying cosy using whatever means necessary!
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!
