Got mine turned on for the first time tonight.

Moved into my house 3 months ago and I haven't yet had the chance to test the heating system. Normally I'd just put a jumper on at this temperature and be ok, but as I feel I'm starting with a cold and it is starting to get chilly outside, I figured tonight would be a good night to test that the heating system works!
This is WAY more fun than monopoly.

Isn't it shocking to see how fast this thread is moving and how many fires have been lit/CH turned on albeit briefly to take the chill off... And it is still (just) August

No, no heating on yet - the east coast is cold but I've found my buff (really needs a wash!), dug out my bamboo base layer and got a woolly jumper over the top and even got a pair of socks on. Lambswool throw at the ready.

Got fleece throw from JL the other day but can't bear it over me - it's all static and my body can't breathe. Will save it for over the top of the duvets in mid winter.

We got a new boiler system late last year and it was very efficient but keeping it set to manual (apart from 15*).

    Hope everyone can be cosy.

I put ours on as we've just got back from hols but then had a panic at hearing the boiler kick in too often. I'm scared about the heating. I'm still paying last years bill off.

So it's off but also the blankets have been moved into the living room cupboard. This year the heating will be on very little beause of the cost.
  • I returned home yesterday after being away for the weekend and our central heating thermostat which was set to 19degs. had kicked in!

It IS worrying me. After last years bitter winter, that hot early spring was wonderful, but after that....summer has been cold. Last summer, our first in this house, we had hugely high temps in the concrete farm yard..this year its been cold enough to wear a coat many July/august days out there. The grazing is already a little lighter than we normally expect, though we'll be ok in that respect...but its really quite a fear. we've also had two dryish winters....I wonder if this is the time that balance is righted and we swim in cold mud for months. :(

neighbour called in (who doesn't usually feel the cold) and agreed with me her nose had an icicle too hanging off it after half an hour in here. I had been stitching and fingers chilly. So woodburner lit with the choppings off the apple tree in spring and some fir cones found on a walk. Have a few bags of wood (donated by diy'ing friends) in the shed but need to get out and sort some wood for future fires. Was so busy enjoying the gallanting of the summer that i didn't think about planning wood for the winter, but now am concentrating fully on it :T

No heating on here yet but I really noticed the change in weather yesterday when I went into the kitchen (always our coldest room). Just like someone has switched summer off! Today I have a long sleeved T shirt and a jumper on - first time I've worn 2 layers. I'm still ok at night with the 9 tog but no doubt we will soon be fastening the other quilt onto it. I do worry about people not being able to afford heating. I had a chest infection 2 years ago and it knocked me sideways. It must be such a worry for older people or those who are more frail. I don't think I've ever had one in my adult life and was surprised how ill I was and for so long. That experience has made me feel for anyone who suffers in the cold weather but can't afford to get the heat they need.
