I'm having a rest day today so moving about less and feeling the chill more - I've put a fleece on and feel quite comfortable without heating on so far, but the load of washing I need to get dry (no TD and it's not a line drying day at all!) might persuade me to put the heating on for a few hours today.

Hoping to leave it off as long as possible - I do use halogen heaters for an hour or so in the evenings sometimes.

It is either heating or whisky-which is more MSE?
What a silly question. Whiskey wins every day. Much more MSE. Keeps you warm and gets you inebriated enough to fall asleep and ignore the cold. Stock up now it's only £13.00 a litre in Tesco for Bells blended scotch whiskey. 40 shots should last a couple of [STRIKE]days[/STRIKE] weeks.... 1 hour of electric heating 30pence or 1 shot of whiskey per hour 32.5pence.

  • Just read my gas and electric meters as I do every month to submit a reading (duel fuel) and my bill for using the same amount before the increase has caused my billl to increase almost 45%.
Can't understand how since the units are the same and I must admit I can't work out the bumf from the power company but at this rate I'll be like "JARAYA" in her post above and be keeping my heating for best too.
I can afford to pay but I do admit I fear for some in the winter, fuel prices have become ridiculous.
I also begrudge giving the power companies so much money though and will be doing my bit to use as little as possible.

I don't understand these people who switch their central heating off.

Mine is controlled by thermostat and timer. If the temperature warrants it then the CH operates. None of this switching off in March and switching on in October/November malarkey.

Just let it use the facilities built in!

Bit chilly here, but haven't put the heating on yet as we don't have any money coming in. Self employed Hubby recovering from an unexpected operation, so don't want to spend anything I don't have to. I am crocheting a big blanket though!

Warm enough here, light cardigans being used.

I did have the heating on once last week - just in the kitchen though as I had a mountain of washing to get through. Instead I have hooked up the tumble dryer in the shed to use when I need to.

I am hoping to keep the heating off for as long as possible. The good thing about this house is that it retains heat very well, so I am hoping I can get away with as little time as possible with the heating on this year.

It's 12:30am. The temperature now is 18 deg C inside the house (upstairs bedroom). The window is open slightly. I'm warm. Why are we talking about heating now. Mine will be off till it gets under 12 deg C inside at night. That's about 5 deg C outside at night and 12 deg C outside during the day. Last year that was the 20th October then again 25th October, the 7,8 and 9th November and from the 14th November onwards till the 20th March and a bit more was needed on the 26th and 27th March.

It's 10c where I am today, right now. Two tops, hoodie, jeans, blanket, two pairs of socks. :( hoping it's not going to be another harsh winter but apparently all the early signs are there.

It is a little chilly here today @ 1:30pm 14C out and 16C in. I can understand if people need the heating on to get that up a bit.

My heating is off but upstairs windows (except toilet) are shut. Downstairs kitchen and dining room windows are open. DH is in a tshirt and I am in a jumper....I also have my warm Spaniel sat in my feet:D

I am hoping to hold out as long as I can with heating this year as we live in a nice modern warm home but I feel the cold so badly I can literally sit with my back to the radiator on max and still be cold. Although I am only 30 I lived for 6 yrs with my ex in a farmhouse with no heating and now with DH if I am cold I put the heating on, I refuse to be cold.

I am more mindful these days though and am not amused that the utility company paid back the credit and reduced the direct debit so that we are covering but not adding significantly to the balance if the winter is cold.
Can I ever learn this budgeting lark? So far it's not looking promising
