OH and I were talking about this at the start of the week, agreeing that last year was good in terms of putting off turning it on, but we wanted to try keep it off longer this year. Then this afternoon my father and elderly grandmother come round to visit so I turned it on for them.. *sigh* It went back off soon as they left but this always seems to be our problem, family coming over and being cold, then us feeling guilty and turning it on. Anyone else have visitor heating related guilt?!

Last year, we said t people ''we'd love you to come but its cold here, dress warm''. We put heating/woodburner on for them and encouraged them to keep coats on.

This year it will be colder, but there will be one warm enough room if I can keep the woodburner going. so it'll be fine. :)

The other ''guest'' problem is dh and I find ourselves panting and sweating in other people's homes. We went to someone's christmas party last year and only lasted 45 mins before getting out of the house to come home. Ohers were in winter appropriate evening wear...I was in a dress its been to cool to wear pretty much all this summer!

Admittedly I try to save my heating 'for best' almost! Haha!

I have only two storage heaters which don't even have a temperature setting. They are both downstairs and no heating upstairs and I do freeze my bits off in winter!

I do remember how wonderful it used to be to have gas central heating when I was living with my then partner and I do miss it!
I don't even have a man to put my cold feet against anymore! Hehe!
  • Wow..shocked to hear heating being on anywhere yet. It's 18 here so far today, had the bedroom fan on last night and a window open.Guess we are lucky here so far!Seen a lot of people post we're expecting a harsh winter..is that true?

There's no point given yourself hypothermia or boasting of how little heating you use. the temperature variations, especially in this country are crazy. In the north were about 5 degrees colder than the south with out wind! The main thing is to keep warm so that you don't end up in hospital.

I agree to a point. For many here ''paying the bill'' simply isn't an option. For me, I'd rather pay for more insulation to improve the house than pay more heating. As we don't have heating beyond the wood burner this year, we're not ging to have much choice....I don't want to waste money buyin and running electric heaters that will be used for a few onths only.

If your choices are genuinely limited as to heating its nice to have some camaraderie here from others in the same boat or similar one, and thins like preparing for winter thread, giving tips and ideas how to avo hypothermia, keep a bouyany spirit etc are useful and wel received.

If you hve choices, by all means use them wisely for your best comfort...including heating :) e.g. if we really do start to suffer of course I'll buy an electric heater or two, but I'll still be being''mean''about it and hopefuly being supportive of others who hae fewer choices...after all, the laptop generates some heat :rotfl::D

    Good for you.

Many people don`t have well insulated homes, don`t have solar gain, may be poorly, cannot afford to eat well etc etc so yes they will feel the cold more and for them and those who live north, then yes it is cold

I am one of the lucky ones, I live in a very well insulated eco house. Solar gain plus shading, keeps the house at a comfortable temperature 24 hours a day without heating and in fact (honestly) just a candle will keep a room warm.

I worry about my children in their homes and bought slankets for each of them in the sales last spring. A cold winter will hit them hard financially and I hope also to be able to give them all a little money to help this year as our heating bills are so low. I am all right jack, what a horrible expression
For most of my life I lived in a double brick, single glazed cheaply built large detached Edwardian house. When we left (2004) the winter quarter gas bills were £375 each quarter. When my father was alive we had gas fires set on miser rate (there really was such an option). First thing my Mum did after he died was get a new water heater (was a very ancient Ascot Major) and central heating installed.

Now we are in a solidly built double glazed 50's built place. Good loft insulation but not much more.

Tis the menopause that is heating the house now :rotfl:

  • I made a small fire last night, just before going to fetch OH home from work - only one shovel of coal and then one medium log. Could have done without it, but it looks and feels so nice, and `welcome-homey`. A treat for OH really, as I`d had the day off and he hadn`t! Will do same tonight, probably.
  • We've also had a new combi boiler fitted and are hoping for lower bills. But...last night I was really cold and uncomfortable, so we turned off all the rads except the one in the lounge and put the heating on 20c for about an hour, shutting all doors. Bliss!
I have an underactive thyroid and lousy circulation, so really feel the cold - my fingers can go white just looking at them! OK during the day when I'm active, but sitting at night to read a book or watch TV I can't see the point in not being comfortable. (Speak to me again when the bills come in)!
    Normal people worry me.

    IT IS ON!!!

It is freezing-I hate this thread every year because there is no way we could wait till October /Nov and put the heating on -we'd die of the cold. 18/19 outside!!!-well lucky you if it gets to 18/19 inside we know it must be summer time here!!

In fact I was going to post today please don't start this thread this year because I do not want to know how very warm it is in other parts of the UK whilst I am cold!

It is either heating or whisky-which is more MSE?

I had to put my heating on yesterday for an hour as we were all layered up with clothes and blankets but it was still freezing so gave in for an hour. the weather was so bad tho that it blew down the fence in our garden and damaged our conservatory just a little but enough to cause a leak
i am still hoping not to put it on again until the end of october but it isnt looking likely
Torry quine i am only about 40 miles from youand cant believe the weather difference, I am so jealous
