Is your heating ON or OFF?

Its pretty cold here still. Had lots more snow today (must be a total of 30cms by now). Our road is impassable at the moment too.
Had the heating on timed (2hrs in morning and 2hrs in evening). As we are all in the one room I dont need the heating on all the time as our body heat seems to be enough today. My little ones have vests on and we have all been snuggled under the blanket watching films.
I have also had candles burning which seems to have made a difference to the heat in the room.
The only room really cold is the kitchen with its tiled floor but I just have to remember to put slippers on to go in there lol.2 adults and 3 children DD (14), DD (12) & DS (10) :smileyhea and 2 mental beagles.
Paying off debt bit by bit0 -
I got well and truly told off by an old uni friend who now lives in the Ural Mountains in Russia. Was moaning on in an email about the weather and how cold I felt going to the shops. She wrote back saying that what we have would feel like a heatwave to her. It is now -35 in her town. Just to add insult to injury flights are taking off and landing from her local airport and all public transport is working. If that packs up people get horses and sleighs and keep going. Makes the UK look a bit of a laughing stock when you see how gridlocked everything is.0

Most people who do not have their heating on have different priorities to you, that is all.
It does not mean they are not looking after their families or they don't manage their finances well or any of the other things that I have seen you imply since you joined this thread.
Healthy people who can move around, have other sources of heat (even blankets and hot water bottles) do not necessarily need the heating on constantly.
Of course everyone needs to stay healthy but this thread is about support and advice, no implied criticism for those who do not have their heating on for whatever reason.
I would be just as disappointed to hear someone constantly make little digs at people who did have their heating on alot or set on high - people make their own individual choices and those deserve to be respected.
things might be different for us next week, i can see exactly where you are coming from with this post x
i know people at the moment where its as simple as heat or eat luckily thats not me this week (i got a whole £75 quid from ex for maintenance lol )
i hate giving so much to british gas, just feeling slightly under the weather today so mine has to stay on, i cannot be ill this close to xmas

well, we had years with barely a puff of snow in the south so its not surprising we're less geared up for it, but priorities are changing a bit I think. I've been in snowy places where things have closed for weather....its just less of a drama than here, I think because people expect it more. Also, even in this time of cuts UK does reasonably well when we look at state support: its true that we all ..not just the warm house people;)..feel the vulnerable shouldn't have to choose between food and necessary heat..that's a product of our provision for society. I remember visiting UK in the winter when it snowed as a kid and I KNOW we as kids used to routinely wear more clothing...I was out today and quite shocked at how many kids and teens with no hats and scarves on.
I also heard people at the hospital when I was there at the weekend whinging about the fact the council wasn't gritting our home driveways and paths...tbh I'd rather the old had food and the young had education and we had to find out own grit for a few weeks a year. In fact, we did just that and bought grit...not sure we bought enough though....:o didn't expect it this early!0 -

I think the weather is supposed to 'warm' up in the next week or two. I hope so
I'm lucky, we have the heating on 24/7 at the moment downstairs, as we're ill and more importantly we have a skinny, old greyhound and I don't like leaving him downstairs alone when it's subzero outside (I'm thinking of dog pyjamas for him - is that a bit mad?). Upstairs is hotwater bottle country though and boy can you feel it when you nip upstairs for anything!!
I'm hoping when the temp goes above zero that we can turn it off again at night.0 -

not mad at all, mine LIVES in her equafleece coats ATM. She has the onsy-fllece jumpers and the onsy t-shirts. The back legs keep them from rolling up the herring gut of a grey and they don't have fastenings so nothing that a bony-dog cn hurt itself lying on. We love them!0 -

I do agree with you about this. For some people it is a choice bewteen do they eat or turn the heating on. Im sure people on here, who lets face it are on a money saving advice site, dont squander their income or have no idea how to budget. Some dont have the luxury of covering all the goal posts as such.
There are of course the exceptions. I know of someone (not linked to this site in any way) who spends most of her benefits on phoning tarot readers and buying fags and booze. Then complains she cant afford to keep herself or the kids warmMakes you despair

And I'm sure if someone like that posted then people would come up with specific suggestions for her (polite ones of course), same as if someone ill, elderly or with babies posted that they couldn't afford to put their heating on.
It's the general implied criticism that makes me feel, when people posting are actually coping in very difficult circumstances, they shouldn't be made to feel bad about that imo.
