Can I ask how much your bills were last year and what sized house you live in/how many of you there are?

We were in a penthouse flat last year so expect we saved a lot of money from heat rising.

This year we are in a two bed terrace. I'm wondering what the difference will be...

Just looked online and last year our bill was £241 from the quarter from end of Nov to end of Dec. No idea how that compares.

My wife and I live in a 3 bedroom detached bungalow with good loft insulation, double glazing and cavity wall insulation. Our monthly Direct Debit is £70 and on top of this I paid a one off payment of £56 to avoid it increasing.

We got our gas and electric bill yesterday which showed we were £259 in credit on our account, such a relief. We're not going to go mad with having the heating on but at least we don't have to worry too much about it and can have it on whilst it's cold like this. We're still only having it on for an hour in the morning and maybe 2-3hrs in the evening depending on how cold we're feeling then we snuggle in blankets on the sofa if we're still feeling chilly.

I do feel for those who can't have their heating on, it's oh so cold at the moment :(

It is really quite horrific to see this huge thread with so many really struggling so much that heating can't go on. I talked to somebody the other day who used her winter fuel allowance to buy a coat. Perhaps its time to not give out an automatic fuel allowance to over 60s and give it to others who really need it. Everyone should at least be able to heat one room in the house especially with temps below zero.

The thing is fuel has to be bought and it comes out of the one pot so it doesn`t matter if the actual cash is spent on a coat

My 250 is in my bank account and I am using my bank account to buy various items. In 2 weeks I will have to buy a tonne of wood pellets as well as having to pay increased electricity costs. That money will come out of my bank account. I think people saying they are using it to buy a coat and whatever are being thoughless in the way they are saying it but it will still be going on fuel but maybe in a zig zag way

Heating is most definately on but not cranked up to the max. Trying to be as carefull as poss.

Have put up the "thick thermal winter curtains" everywhere.
Have thick front door curtain up and draught excluder.
Put silver baking foil behind radiators on external walls (shiny side facing radiator) to reflect heat back into the room.
Put heavy duvets on all the beds plus extra blankets.
Dont believe in having heating on overnight.
All wearing layers and thick socks
Bought those snuggie wraps that they advertise on tv for all the family. Got them half price in "family bargains" shop near us. We look like the teletubbies sat along the sofas.
Leave oven door open after cooking - it heats the kitchen up lovely.
Have put big rugs down on the wooden floors in the lounge and slate floor in the kitchen

Got a lovely surprise when the gas and electric bill arrived this week. We are nicely in credit for both so dont worry about whether we can afford to have heating on.
