Heating is most definately on but not cranked up to the max. Trying to be as carefull as poss.

Have put up the "thick thermal winter curtains" everywhere.
Have thick front door curtain up and draught excluder.
Put silver baking foil behind radiators on external walls (shiny side facing radiator) to reflect heat back into the room.
Put heavy duvets on all the beds plus extra blankets.
Dont believe in having heating on overnight.
All wearing layers and thick socks
Bought those snuggie wraps that they advertise on tv for all the family. Got them half price in "family bargains" shop near us. We look like the teletubbies sat along the sofas.
Leave oven door open after cooking - it heats the kitchen up lovely.
Have put big rugs down on the wooden floors in the lounge and slate floor in the kitchen

Got a lovely surprise when the gas and electric bill arrived this week. We are nicely in credit for both so dont worry about whether we can afford to have heating on.

I built up a nice big credit this year on both gas and elec, so we are okay too....

Im going to beach soon for doggy walks,:D ive got all the gear ready, ive found my army balaclava out, so nobody will see much of me, I shall be so toasty , wrapped up in my duck down coat , snood, gloves, and balaclava..........its been snowing here alday and bitterly cold like everywhere else......the cold weather is suppose to continue well into next week, perhaps they should move christmas 2 weeks early......keep warm .......

I'm sorry if this has been addressed elsewhere - I haven't managed to read the whole thread. However, at work people were discussing heating and some said they leave their heating on all the time in the winter (including turned down low at night) because it's cheaper than turning it off while out and then having to reheat the house from cold again. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I've just been putting it on for a few hours when I'm in and then turning it off but perhaps that's not the best way.

theres loads of discussions with this on the utility threads, if on the boiler is still using gas, all depends on insulation as well if you have any.

AIUI it depends on the construction of your house. I'm not sure which way round it is but I think its if you have a house with solid walls that is slow to heat up the walls will hold heat and help it keep warm for a while (at least this is what I find with our house) but draughts etc will bleed heat of th0se old houses out, so on and off is better? A more modern house with out solid walls might be better kept at low steady temp? I'm almost certain to have this wrong though I've read a few discussions on MSE about it and people don't seem to agree.

    Enjoy the walk shegar!

I was expecting to be in but had to be out for two hours and I'm cold to the bone now...had to have balaclava style clothing off and keep taking gloves off to shake hands etc.

I'm going to turn the wii on once I've defrosted a bit and have a quick game of tennis or something to warm up!

Ive heard that it is cheaper to have it on all the time than powering it up say twice a day. By using the temp controls on the radiators in each room you can control how many rooms you heat. I guess it depends on how you pay for your ch. Pay as you go meters are extortianate. Im on a really good tarriff with edf energy and pay by direct debit ,35 a month for gas and 20 for electric for a 3 bed house. I keep thinking one day they will realise they have undercharged me as this seems too low. But have been here 4 years and the bills seem correct
  • Just seen the news for the Granada region, well at 11.30 this morning and it said that in Manchester city centre temperatures will be as low as -12 and across to North Wales tonight. Looks the same for Merseyside but no warmer than 0 to -1 this afternoon.
