I got well and truly told off by an old uni friend who now lives in the Ural Mountains in Russia. Was moaning on in an email about the weather and how cold I felt going to the shops. She wrote back saying that what we have would feel like a heatwave to her. It is now -35 in her town. Just to add insult to injury flights are taking off and landing from her local airport and all public transport is working. If that packs up people get horses and sleighs and keep going. Makes the UK look a bit of a laughing stock when you see how gridlocked everything is.

My husband worked in Russia for almost 3 years. He used to have to fly 9 hours east of Moscow. The flight to Moscow from London was fine as it was a British Airways. He said that some of the smaller airports didn't defrost their planes. He used to be scared flying in the aeroflot planes. He said they should've been out of commission years ago. Also, when he wanted a smoke at one airport he had to out and stand beside the parked up planes!

They might be flying but there's no way you'd get me on one. Saying that, he used to also have a 15hr train trip after his 9hr flight (Russia is huge!) and the snow there was really bad, and in all his time there, the old steam trains never stopped running.

This is where dh used to work. This train didn't make it, but I have to admit that was a lot worse than what we're having right now - and our trains grind to a halt for a lot less. http://eureferendum.blogspot.com/2010/01/and-russia.html

do remember that if you see someone buying lots of something, it may not be all for them.
Today I brought 14 pts milk and 4 loaves, 1 loaf was for me the rest was for 3 neighbours, 1 elderley, 1 new mum, and 1 with 2 sick under 5's at home

I use to love flying till I got on an Aeroflot plane to fly from Moscow to Ekaterinburg in the Ural mountains. Got on board and had managed to get the emergency exit seats. Soon wished we hadn't there was one almighty draft blowing round that door even before we took off. My seat was at an odd forward angle so I was slightly doubled up. My seatbelt didn't work. I couldn't believe it when the trolley dollies came round with the drinks. This "built like a bus" type opened this can of coke, poured me a small glass then used the rest of the same can to fill 2 other little cups for other people on the plane:D. I just sat there with my eyes shut for the whole flight praying. To give them their due they did land in what looked like hells freezer without a hitch. It was -25 outside. I got the train back, it only looked like a small distance on the map. 24 Hours it took :eek:
