Your absolutely right electric cookers, showers, tumble dryers and most kind of electric heaters eat it like it is going out of fashion but with the rises coming gas prices it is debatable there would be any saving anyhow :(

I was saying to my better half this morning I think it is really sad that we and many many others have to decided how cold is bareable before we put the heating on! It really should not be like this, heat, lighting these arent really lifes little luxuries are they and the worst part is it can only really get even more expensive!

Your so right heat shouldn't be one of the luxuries of life. I consider myself lucky my home is super insulated,a few years ago there's no way i could have gone without heat like i am now.We only had gas fire and no double glasing,we used to freeze
  • Yesterday it was a lovely, sunny day.19c in my flat when I got home.

Today it's rained most of the day. It's cold, but not cold enough to need gloves.Again 19c in the flat and 10c outside.

So only had the heating on one day in all so far.

It's supposed to gave colder this week.

I'm guessing this is somewhat controversial, but I consider some sorts of ''heating'' a luxury. I think to heat a house to be a safe and productive environment when appropriately dressed for the weather and doing one's best to minimise resource wastage is not comparatively a luxury in UK...but I guess many people around the world would love to have some climate control and DO consider it a luxury.

what I consider ''luxury'' is heating a home so that you can wear summer clothing inside and not caring about cost, or impact and yet many people do this.

I grew up with only one coal fire in the whole house, as did most people my age. I still think as long as you have one room all cosy and warm, then that's fine. I know it's nice to have a toasty warm house throughout - but it has to be paid for ...:) If I had gas or elect then I'd turn down/off the rads in places like bedroom and kitchen because you dont really really need these rooms heated unless you have a tiny baby. And if you did have a tiny baby then it could be in the livingroom beside you !
  • Yes, I, too grew up in a house with only one coal fire lit. Funnily enough, even as babies we survived that... ;) Now, like many of the people in this thread, I am not comfortable with the level of heating that most people consider to be "normal". I do appreciate being able to put the heating on and have a cosy house when it's snowy/icy outside, but do not feel it to be all that much of a struggle to live without central heating in the kind of temperatures we are experiencing now. Oh.. and I almost never have colds.. :)

    Cheers

I'm amazed I got thanks, I expected to be roundly told off and marched out. :) My other heating hate...over heated shops. You go in in out door clothes, have to stop to take off coats, scarves, then start peeling off normal layers...jumpers or cardis, by which time your arms are full you feel flustered and in peoples way and don't want to look around and couldn't pick up anything if you wanted too...then have to stand at the door and get dressed again, only to repeat it all, and the people in the shop are working in shirt sleeves or t shirts .....I tend to go inadaquately dressed for outside, but over dressed for inside then shiver outside and grump and get red inside. Its not really worth going out!

Ours is on here, for an hour in the morning to warm the place for showers etc, and a couple of hours in the evening to take the chill off, its blooming freezing here today, we will turn it off if we have a warmer spell, but I dont think we will now, thermostat is set on 17 deg, we lasted till 12th November, which I am very pleased about :T
  • 2am sunday morning heating kicked in thermostat was set to 15c i turned it off not because we didn't need it on but so we could have it on later that day for showers and getting school uniform dry etc,it was 0.3c outside at 7.30 this morning now that is cold for me it was only 18c in Living room and that was with thermostat set at 20c all night forgot to turnit down after showers and i'm full of cold as well as both kids need to get a move on with doing the winter prep but just don't seem to be able to get started can't put door curtains up cos need the rail sorting so temporary i have put them on indoor door frames as being a bit claustrophobic i can't manage to have the doors closed at night thermal curtains keep draught out but move easily it's my way round the problem any way .

as for a coal fire i can't have one and couldn't be in same room as one from when i was a baby it would set me off coughing broncitis (sp) i think even in a room too hot from central heating sets me off
when we were waiting for central heating to be replaced we used the oil radiators so it wouldn't dry air out too much still got them and still use them when only one room needs heating as we can't turn hall rad off they hold the heat and just top up when the thermostat kick in i wouldn't have an electric heater if it didn't have a thermostat that is the bit that helps keep cost down

It was sunny today, so managed to just have the wall heater on in one room. Put all the heating on tonight though as it's bitter cold. -2 at the moment.

Six more weeks then little by little it starts to get lighter again. YAY!
