Sometimes it feels colder than it is because of the damp atmosphere.

It was 7c when I got up this morning. It went up to 9c later. It's still a cosy 18c in the flat without the heating on,so can't complain.

I miss my flat now, don't think the temp ever dropped below 16c while i lived there.

There was a lovely frost on the grass this morningbut it was sunny all day here so it was warmer in the house. Turned the heating on at 5pm though for the evening.

I know what you mean.I do feel lucky that my (rented) flat is so well insulated.I have a very big window in the sitting room, and when it's sunny,it helps as well.

I forgot to say that the 7c temp this morning was outside, and not in the flat!
  • its cold here tonight, i really must sort my chimney with heating on 18 my feet are still cold :(

think i need to make a dehumidifier a priority might make it a little warmer

Yep, a de-humidifier is great for making the house feel warmer... damp air always feels colder than dry air even if the temp is the same ;)

It might be worth turning your heating on for longer but keeping the temperature a little lower with the 'main room' a touch warmer.

Try and make sure you keep water vapour in the house down as much as possible, a window or two open for a short while in the warmest part of the day, do the hoovering or other energetic task then to keep warm.

Put hot water bottles in the bed at teatime to warm them through and re-fill them at bedtime.

Damp is very bad for you, so try and do what you can to minimise it.
Have a google for solar heat catchers, they are made for a few pence and can help raise the temperature a bit more on sunny days, allowing you to turn down/off the heating so you can afford more heating when it's cold.

Hard times hun , wishing you well.

    Thanks bluebag, good advice!

I do open the windows a little each day but i do need to address the damp probs, will look into solar heat catchers, thanks so much for the tip :)

I grew up with only one coal fire in the whole house, as did most people my age.

    Me included.

But then we went a bit upmarket and had a paraffin heater in the hall which was supposedly to warm all of the other rooms whose doors where all left open (it was a bungalow).

Oh, nearly forgot, then we had one of those electric fires that you have high up on a bathroom wall, the ones with a light pull switch.

Thankfully I had a hot water bottle!

There was no central heating of course and you didn't have the immersion heater on in the morning so a lot of the time it was a case of boiling a kettle to have a wash with!

A little tip for anyone who is at home all day without the heating on and at the computer desk or just sitting in one spot.

You will have socks on of course but take your slippers/shoes off and stick your feet on a hot, hot water bottle. It makes one hell of a difference, your whole body will feel lovely and warm not just your feet.

    ;)

It is so so cold here tonight. I've been on the sofa with two blankets and a hot water bottle that has needed topping up twice! brr! Sleep well everyone.
