I'm not sure ... I thought burst pipes are only a worry when it gets down to freezing and below. We only had one burst pipe ever and that was the outside tap last winter when it was subzero for ages. Do you live near enough that you can nip over to switch it on if gets much colder?[/QUOTE]

--to the person considering bulgaria which is simular in climate to turkey --winter is short but very unsavoury without gas--the wood burners create a lot of uncleanliness around the house and housewives spend their lives clearing up after them-i know the turkish gov is considering clamping down on the emisions from these smelly fuels as it tries to get into Europe--we had oil and it was awful and never got the place piping!!--this year we had gas connected and it make the house a home!!

Well ours is off again and will stay off as long as possible.

Its 13 degrees outside and 16 degrees inside. The doggies have a sleeping bag on their beds to get covered up with and i have another fleece that they can have if needs be, the cat has taken to using her furry bed which has been long ignored so they will be fine. The little old doggie is not very mobile so i need to keep him warm.

DH went into work this morning and the company has gone into receivership so it looks like we will be living on fresh air for a while :-(

    Sorry to read this Sunnyday.

Still off here.If the weather stays like this,it won't be coming on any time soon.
  • I came home last night from a 10 day holiday in Dubai (visiting my brother who lives and works there) and it has been 35 C + there. I had the heating on for 1 hour after I arrived home and 1 hour this morning. I havn't had my heating on until now apart from 1 day 2 weeks ago when I had a grandson staying. I was anticipating that I would feel really cold on return from a 'hot' holiday but it's not that bad.

I have heard that it dropped into the minus degrees whilst I was away. If I go away in Nov Dec Jan or Feb I leave my heating on a very low setting to ensure I don't get any frozen pipes but I hadn't thought it necessary in Oct. However, no problems on my return. I am hoping I can continue now with just the occasional boost of ch when absolutely necessary. I would love an open fire or woodburner to use occasionally to burn 'free' fuel but I don't think the cost of installing one would pay for itself.

Can see why you'd want to set the timer then .. bit of a trek just to keep an eye on the heating! :D
That's interesting about the woodburners - I always thought they'd be quite clean. I have an open fire and the dust and dirt is unreal - I feel like I'm never on top of it.
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

My burner is lovely! You do get alot of dust with them though and I tend to vaccum every day and dust every other day but it doesnt take long. As for smells, nope, just a smell of wood from time to time but that is it.

    Good Evening everyone, :hello:

Not posted on this thread before but have been following it since it started.
Our heating finally went on on wednesday last week.
OH was complaining about being cold, which is not like him. So we decided to switch it on.
We have storage heaters so unfortunatly can't just flick a switch and get heat straight away.
Only got the lounge heater on and the whole flat is lovely and warm, not too uncomfortable.
 If we had the other 5 heaters on it would be like a oven.

Sorry to hear about the job losses.

  • Ours is still off too,I'm dreading it to be honest.
I don't want to feel all lethargic and that's just what it does to me.
I'll stick with wrapping up warm and snuggling under a throw of an evening until my OH moans too much, which he has'nt at all, yet:rotfl:.
Actually it's fine at the moment though.
