We are moving to a run down cottage in Bulgaria next summer so to get us ready for their winters and the lack of heating we are really trying to do all this year without the heating on.
We have an open fire that we have agreed we can use but only if we can find a supply of wood or coal ( we will have a wood burning stove over there so that will heat the cottage if required when the winter really hits)
I am lucky though that I grew up with the windows open even in winter and my mother never liked a hot house so the bedroom never had the rads turned on anyway.
I would rather be cold then hot anyway and feel flustered when in shops that have heat

I am doing mass washing though to make sure all our jumpers etc are ready and I fully expect to look like the goodyear blimp.

Well ours is off again and will stay off as long as possible.

Its 13 degrees outside and 16 degrees inside. The doggies have a sleeping bag on their beds to get covered up with and i have another fleece that they can have if needs be, the cat has taken to using her furry bed which has been long ignored so they will be fine. The little old doggie is not very mobile so i need to keep him warm.

DH went into work this morning and the company has gone into receivership so it looks like we will be living on fresh air for a while :-(

i have just turned mine on for the first time this year at home--but i have an empty flat and was wondering if i should program the heating to come on once a day while it is not in use--its purpose built and faces east west with a south facing 'wall'-doesnt seem ever cold internally without the heating on but i worry about pipes??

Sorry to hear that, I was made redundant earlier this year so can totally understand what you are going through.

ours is off, i think. i did set the boiler to come on for an hour in mornings and evening's but i think i over rode it. so it hasn't been on. we had it on , on sunday as had so much washing to dry from holiday and didn't want to use tumbly but it was cold tho. bit chilly today but not too bad. we have out bedroom windows open in day till about 4 ish. then i shut windows and curtains and that keeps the house warm. it nice to shut the outside out. hubby and i have been having snuggles on sofa under duvet alot which keeps us very warm. and the kids have tooked their extra blankets off bed so i guess they aren't too cold at bedtime.
