We, too, decided to save it for the cold, snowy days. Especially we‘re going to have a new baby in December and can foresee that we may need to keep the heating on well in to March.

15°C indoors is not that bad. We shall wait a bit longer and see. Glad to see some many likeminded people here!

Well ours is off again and will stay off as long as possible.

Its 13 degrees outside and 16 degrees inside. The doggies have a sleeping bag on their beds to get covered up with and i have another fleece that they can have if needs be, the cat has taken to using her furry bed which has been long ignored so they will be fine. The little old doggie is not very mobile so i need to keep him warm.

DH went into work this morning and the company has gone into receivership so it looks like we will be living on fresh air for a while :-(

Aw, sorry to hear about the job losses Sunny Day and Gothicfairy ... I'm sure you will manage better than most since you are already trying save pennies by doing things like keeping the heating off.

i have just turned mine on for the first time this year at home--but i have an empty flat and was wondering if i should program the heating to come on once a day while it is not in use--its purpose built and faces east west with a south facing 'wall'-doesnt seem ever cold internally without the heating on but i worry about pipes??
I'm not sure ... I thought burst pipes are only a worry when it gets down to freezing and below. We only had one burst pipe ever and that was the outside tap last winter when it was subzero for ages. Do you live near enough that you can nip over to switch it on if gets much colder?
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Sunnyday - what sickening news for your OH and you. Those of us who have gone through this kind of job uncertainty will understand exactly how you must be feeling. Do hope you are soon able to turn your situation around. I think this coming Christmas is going to be a very subdued affair for a lot of people. Do hope you've got a good storecupboard and some savings to tide you over.

de1amo - I'd set your thermostat to come on around 15 degrees. We haven't even started winter yet and it's not worth risking burst pipes. Also, if your flat is empty and we have a lot of rainy weather, dampness can creep through the fabric of the building and you risk getting damp/mouldy patches on your walls. Autumn/winter sunshine coming through the windows will help a little, but it's not worth taking the risk.

So sorry to hear that. I've just lost my job as well so can relate to how worrying it is. Good luck.

We had ours on for a bit a couple of weeks ago, but I've just had to put it on again now - it's freezing outside - and as is usual it started raining just as I went to pick up DD2!

We have had a log fire going for the odd night, but last night when it was lit we could smell the smoke in the room next door, so I think there must be a leak in the chimney or something.

It's getting gloomy now, so I'm just going to close the curtains and pick up my other two children from the bus stop.
