Can I ask a question? The people who have been holding out for as long as possible, once on do you have it on all the time? What are your temperature settings? Do you have it on for a few hours a day? I'm curious!
Once I switch on my timer, it usually stays on all winter. A couple of hours in the morning and about 4 or 5 hours in the evening. When it was very cold and we had snow last Jan I had it on nearly all day ... gas bill was awful! I don't know what temperature mine's on - the TRVs have numbers and I have it at different numbers in different rooms.
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Once mine is on it will be set to come on for a couple of hours in the morning and a few hours in the evening and the temp is set at 16C.

I work from home so if it's colder than normal I'll maybe whack it on for 15 minutes to heat the house up a bit and if it's mild again it'll get switched back off.
  • still off... windows open... it's boiling in here and quite warm outside. Monday should be no problem.

It has been on 16/17 oct low 17c when my granddaughter had sleepover (shes only 6) and 23/24 october again on low while it was on i got a fair bit of laundry dry overnight i won't have it on all the time as couldn't afford the bill if the temp inside goes lower than 16c the heating will go on as low as possible we have trv on all the rads try to keep them no higher than 4 can't have it too hot or too cold my youngest has asthma so we have to be carefull i only mastered the settings on the heating last year (heating was put in approx 6 years ago )our winter bill was £160 including gas for cooking this was our limit we would of had an increase in our d/d if we'd used more and that was not an option

If you are worried about a big bill try reading your meter before you put the heating on and when you turn it off note how many hours it was on and work out cost this will then act as your guide do remember if you have g ch it will also use an amount of electric to pump the hot water round the system. We then planned when and how long we could manage to have the heating on if its 17c or above i don't have it on till night time then its on the timer and the thermostat(sp) i also keep a diary of days heat on and in and out temp as a guide it worked out around 3 hours at at a time with a few spare for very very cold days hth

Thanks Muffin Man. I do need to do that!

At the moment ours has been on in the mornings sometimes for an hour or so. Then in the evenings for a couple of hours.

Thanks or everyones comments. I find it really interesting to hear what other peoples habits are re: heating.

Well mine is still off here although last night was really quite chilly. It has been really wintery the last few days and the wind and rain have been unreal!! However I held off and just got into my pjs and dressing gown, had a cuppa and felt much warmer. Not feeling it nearly as cold today so it will be off again :D

I have horrible old night storage so when mine goes on for the winter its usually kept on or else it takes overnight to heat back up again (IYSWIM). I ALWAYS start with it on low input and low output so that I have the option to go up if needed and I was given a lovely gas heater last winter (my parents couldnt believe how cold it was in here and that was with all the heating on :o desperately need new double glazing but just cant afford it and the cat flap was always letting a draft in - sadly no cat now so catflap closed up) so that is used as a top up IF needed.

Well we made it to the last day of challenge, how did we all do?

Feels pretty mild so far this morning here and I'll behanging thewashing outside in a while and opening the windows so heating is still OFF.

I've just started to wonder if I can even manage a day or so in November now to keep it off. This is the longest I've ever kept the heating off for - the mildness this week definately helped, plus there's only me to worry about. Going on last year's bill cost I've saved £20 for last week. In fact I think I lasted until mid Oct last year so make that £40 so far saved.

Nearly done now, 6 days down and 1 day left :D

And remember what I post below, its more important than worrying about keeping to the challenge

Please don't worry if you don't manage this week. It's better to keep warm and cosy if you need to

Still off here and like you, I'm on my own, so no pressure from anyone to switch it on. It's been mild here in Cambs this week so that helped. Today's temp is 17c indoors and 11c outside.

When you think of like that, it makes it a lot easier to go and put on an extra jumper instead of flicking the switch!
