It's currently off despite the rather chill wind outside and dropping temperature. I'm wearing a thick charity shop body warmer which cost me £3, and a pair of fingerless gloves bought from a market stall for £1 which are keeping my fingers warm while I'm typing this. Hoping my "invest to save" outlay will save me more than £4 in fuel costs over the coming winter.

My heating is off in the day time and on for a while in the evenings. I just had a lovely walk round the park and didn't find it too cold. I even did a bit of weeding in the veritable jungle!!

I really wanted to hold off until 1 November but seeing as I have two poorly children and its only 10oC indoors at the moment I have put the heating on for a little while (thermostat is on 15oC which seems just fine). I dont really feel the cold (especially being pregnant) but even I felt it was cold in here when we got back from school!

Still going to use it wisely because I think once you get used to having the heating on its hard to get used to it being off lol.

Well after having to put the heating on today, I decided to have a go at lighting the log fire. I'm usually pretty useless at it but today I managed it! Yay! It's sizzling away now. I may even have to take off the two scarves I have had on inside! :)

it's finally getting cold here in notts., and my fingers and feet are feeling it now, tho' i should really wear thicker socks and get round to using fingerless gloves (have lots of old ones not being used) as i am prone to getting chilblains (been suffering for past 10yrs and am only 40!). found OH had switched on the heating the other day much to my horror!!! altho' i did mention to him a couple of times that i wouldn't be putting it on till Dec. time or so/or at least when the temp. drops below minus. thankfully, it was for only on for 5mins before i stepped into the house and i'd gone to use the bathroom and found the radiator warm... what a shock i had!

since i am v frugal, i've always worn a 'house jacket' which keeps me warm. this is an old fleece coat that i bought when i was 17 and have worn it for mostly garden work and at nights at home if i'm watching tv, or if i'm cooking something quite smelly/smoky. when watching tv, i always love to wrap a blanket over me, covering my feet underneath it.. feels dead comforting... does anyone else wear a coat of some sort at home, or am i the only tramp on here??!!

ps. i was ill the the other week for a whole week with a bad cold - drippy/blocked nose, cough, head cold and a few aches. am just getting over it now but the cough is getting worse. developed into a chesty type.. phlegm spitting isn't v gracious!!!

I'm cold - well my hands are. just read about fingerless gloves and I never thought about these. Think I will have a look for a pair to wear around the house for times like this

I'm not putting the heating on yet - I am trying to hang on until 1st Nov, can I last another 11 days?

Another thing to bear in mind is that keeping the extremities warm helps the rest of the body be warm - at least that's what I found out in my case.

In the coldest weather, I wear when indoors:

    1) House boots. Ugg style but much cheaper at £8 in Asda, and if you only wear them indoors they will easily last two or three winters.

    2) fingerless gloves. You can get them for a quid in Poundland (ok, last year's price). Do not cut the tips off ordinary gloves as they fray, but if you want to do that you need to stitch back the cut ends to prevent the annoying fraying.

    3) A woolly hat. I have a black fleece balaclava (go on, laugh, lol) which I bought for almost nothing in a sale somewhere a few years ago. It doubles up as a thick hat. Keep your head warm, because that's where more than 20% of body heat is lost.

    4) Always have to hand a flask with hot drink in it. Not coffee or ordinary tea, but mostly hot water with a slice of lemon in it. Warming, cleansing, good for the kidneys and well hydrating, which we need in the winter too.

So: feet, hands and head kept well warm, and taking in warm fluids. The fleecy jacket and jumper and thick trousers will take care of the body.

That said, I'd never go completely without heating in the coldest weather, because life needs to be a bit comfy or there's little point in it, however before I up the thermostat, I take the steps above. :)
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.

I really wanted to hold off until 1/11 but I've relented and put it on for an hour (thermostat is only on 17C). Despite being wrapped up well I haven't been able to get warm at all today and this afternoon the thermometer in the lounge was only registering 14C :(

(Its going off again as soon as the hour is up!)
