It might be a good idea if someone remembers to post this every couple of pages or so for newcomers to the thread?

Mine is off but has been on for a bit here and there for a couple of hours in the evening.

I really am so cold this morning though, even my nose is cold lol, sat here with a blanket over my legs and a wheat bag on my back which works well to ease my pain and warm me up.
My heating is quite ineffective or so I thought, not having had it on all week makes me realise it does take that chill off. Mind you I still have my summer duvet on but the fact I am sleeping in a jumper is a sign that maybe its time to dig out the thicker one.. lol.

    Yes I am mad.

When I'm not working in the morning I always stay in bed an extra hour, in the winter. It saves on heating, and I just love that feeling of warmth and comfort when outside is raining and/or windy.
Yes! :D In fact I ran downstairs, and brought the laptop back to bed this morning, how's that for loving my bed?! It is just so cold here this morning, 0C outside not sure what it is inside. Wish I didn't have to go out today or I'd just stay here all day!
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

  • Just back from the school run and it is beautiful out there, the sun glare was bad though, there is no cloud cover at all. Its 0 degrees here too. Boys are out with hats and scarves and gloves although the biggest who is 11 going on 41 is not amused! :D

I am thinking about buying my wee dog a coat, I always thought they were naff but she looks cold, and she loves sitting in the garden, I am worried she will stay indoors all winter otherwise.

Its still off, although we have have had the 1kw fire on in the lounge for and hour in the evening, it seems to keep it above 18deg for the rest of the evening, and its still staying within my 8kwh per day target.

We have also tried to cook meals using the oven as much as we can, to keep the heat in the kitchen, sort of killing two birds with one stone so to speak.

As its bright and sunny today all the south facing curtains have been pulled right back to get as many rays in as poss (every little helps!)

Going to have to resort to giving more time to heat the water as the shower is not as hot first thing.

The aim is to keep the gas CH off until November, it looks promising as the forecast last night said it was going to get more mild at the weekend.

On this day last year, here the overnight temp was a positively balmy 10.5 deg and reached 17 deg by day!
  • not had the central heating on yet...but i have had the oil filled radiator on for a boost in the evening...
so...am i fooling myself ? and would i be better off putting the heating on or running the 2kw electric oil filled rad ??

Assuming you are only heating one room with it, its cheaper than heating the whole house using gas central heating.

If you had one 2kw radiator in each room that would be a different story.

The average cost of one unit of electricity is say 12p, at that rate your 2kw radiator will be costing you 24p an hour.

Depending on your tariff your unit charge may well be lower (or higher!) Always found a fan heater to be more efficient in heating a room up quickly.

Off... We don't have 'central' heating, instead we have night storage leccy heaters in all rooms... which the LL is at a loss to explain! (As in they literally don't know how to operate them correctly and efficiently!)

Thus far we've only given up and popped it on for 5/10 mins to take the edge off when it was *really* cold, but that's not going to be enough soon - this place runs incredibly cold and it's getting worse! Must get the draught excluders down!

Very shortly we'll need to retrieve the gas bottle heater from our little alcove and pop it in the livingroom.
    On the up :D

  • There was a lot of discussion early on in the thread about storage heaters. If you can find the manufacturer's label on them it might be woth googling for the instructions. We had them in a previous house and I thought they were great and very economic. FlutterbyUK has them in her flat and I think she said her electricity bill for one month is around the £40 mark.
