Is your heating ON or OFF?

  • We haven't put ours on yet. I do feel the cold but find it's a good excuse to keep active instead of sitting around watching telly when I'm in the house. Feels very chilly today though!!!
  • Got the boiler serviced today and asked him to turn the hot water down to 54 degrees as its far too hot for my wee hands, so hopefully that will save a few pennies. Had the heating on for around fifteen minutes yesterday, the OH came home from work and complained it was too hot!! This house heats really quickly.

I thought it had to be at least 60c because of legionnaire's disease?
  • I don't have a tank, its a combi, so it should be fine. We also don't bathe, we have an electric shower.

ETA - to be honest, I have just washed the dishes, and it doesn't seem to be that much cooler, although I think I may have put a little less cold water in the basin.

It went on one evening in late Sept for a couple of hours, when it was particularly cold here, other than that it's still off. I've just bought some thermal long johns and sox, what an amazing difference they've made. The heating will go on either when my hands and toes go blue with cold, or when it snows, whichever is first ;).

:eek::eek: Really??? I have never had mine above 54c because thats all I need it to be to run a hot bath, and would worry about DDs scalding themselves if it were hotter.

Now I need to find out about this... BRB

It's what I was told by a man who came to service our boiler once when I asked him to turn the temperature down as it was too hot.

Well that was a scary few minutes reading.... From what I have found out, optimum temp for legionnaires is 20-45c....

Unbelieveably there is no leaflet for home owners but there is one for providers of residential information so here is the link to that one... http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg376.pdf

It appears to recommend keeping your tank at 60+c but this should be balanced with risks of scalding.

Basically, I have run my tank at 54/55c for years and years with no problems but am going to turn it up. Maybe not all the way to 60c though.

I wonder what the difference in cost is..... altho health is much more important.

I also found a forum discussing boiler temps and some people have theres at more than 80c :eek:

Thanks Justamum for pointing this out, I had no idea :/

my neighbour is a gp and we both have exactly the same houses ie solar power with wood pellet stove backup for days like today and our tanks never get up to 60 unless we put the immersion on, which we may do once every couple of months. She is not worried about leggionaires and neither am I. Communal tanks in oap homes, boarding schools and hotels etc are a different matter altogether
