So if someone had oil fuelled central heating, could they put their heating on 24 hours hours per day and still claim not to have the heating on?

I understand the phrase "not having the heating on" to mean nothing artificially adding heat to the house.

I agree. This thread has become tainted. If you have a coal/log fire or a portable heater switched on in one room, heating should be classed as on.

I think it's warmer today. Yesterday morning when I came home from work my kitchen temp was 12 degrees C but today it is 13.2 C. However my heating is on for an hour this morning before I go to bed. Yesterday I was so cold I put an extra 13.5 tog single quilt on top of my sheet to lie on, threw in a heated wheat bag and snuggled in with a 13.5 tog quilt on top. I have an additional 13.5 tog quilt to add on top if temps really drop.

I wish the rain would stop. I live very near to the river Ouse and when I walked my dog on the river bank yesterday the river was very high. I had to take a long detour home from work yesterday morning because of flooding in York. I see from tv this morning that this is the wettest Nov on record since 1951.

Still haven't pressed the button - although DD1 begged me to last night. Trouble was she was only wearing a t-shirt, shortie trackies with nothing on her feet!!!
I keep everyone busy in the evenings - hoovering is a good one. Although I have to say it was nippy last night!!
    One life.

You may understand it to mean one thing and I understand it to mean another...that's what makes us interesting human beings ;) my CH is off therefore I consider my heating to be off. I'm not using any gas or elec to heat my home and for us (me and my partner) that is our aim because it is not cost effective which makes it too expensive.

Ive put our heating on on timer now as its so cold in the mornings. No point in freezing and we watch our energy use most of the year so we dont have to be cold in December.

I agree, the thread asks: "Is your heating on or off." Most people would consider that 'heating' is being used here to refer to 'central heating'.

Where people have multi-fuel burning stoves and burn 'free wood' e.g. stuff from Freecycle choosing not to put the central heating on, then surely this is adopting the Money Saving ethos wholeheartedly and their heating is off ;).

However if we want to be pernickety :D - if the multi-fuel burning stove also runs household radiators then the central heating is on.

Currently my heating is only really on in the morning for 45mins just before I get up.I've been out a lot in the evenings so by the time I get home there's no point putting it on for an hour before I go to bed, so I wrap up in a blanket.
