Is your heating ON or OFF?

  • Ours is still off, we've got the medium duvet on our bed now though, need to get the heavier one cleaned for when it gets colder, and we've lit a couple of fires in the last few weeks. Hoping to keep the heating off for as long as possible!

You will all probally hate us but me and OH have lived in our flat for 2 years now have only turned the heating on once, when we moved in to check the radiators all worked. Our buillding was only build in 06 and as we only have 2 walls that touch the outside and flats above, below and either side of us we are pretty snug.

What temperature does your thermostat say in the middle of winter? We only just moved here in the Summer and the lowest the temperature has read is 17.5 and today it is 19.5. I'm in the South East, which part of the country are you in Fishcake?
  • My house (detached), so no neighbours to keep me warm, is ticking along between 15 and 18 degrees at the moment without the heating on. I start to feel a bit chilly when it gets close to 15 but apart from 2 evenings when I had visitors I have still only had ch on once for myself when I came in wet from the rain one evening. I have no other form of heating apart from a gas fire. I will be switching ch on though as soon as temps are below 15. I live in North Yorkshire so not the warmest part of the country.

I read my gas and electric meters each week on a Sunday morning and then register them on imeasure. It helps me to try and better the previous week, a sort of competition with myself. This week I reduced my electric consumption by 15 units and my gas by 4 probably because I've had no visitors.

I would love a wood burning stove but don't have an available outside wall to place one. I had been planning on having my inset gas fire removed and a fireplace and hearth built so that I could instal a woodburner but my family seem to think this is a really bad idea. I think they like the convenience of the present system when they stay.

I'm finding that after 2 years of keeping my heating off until nearly November and seriously limiting my use after Mar 1 I have saved a lot of money. However, I am also getting much more used to living in a cooler temperature. I automatically now reach for the extra layer of clothes including the lovely thermal vests, long and short sleeved, that I bought last year. I also found that switching to using lamps with low energy bulbs, instead of all my overhead halogen bulbs, was also a good money saver. My friends and family also buy me lots of candles and I think they definitely help to raise the temp somewhat.

It has been quite mild here in London in the last few days, so no heating at all for me this past week. Long may it last. :A
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.

I heard this from DD2 who works there - I thought she was only saying it because she wants us to move closer to her though :D.

I must admit I get one of those e-mail weather forecasts every day and nine times out of ten London is two or three degrees warmer than here in the cold hard north.

Still off, but woodstove on for a little while tonight to take off the little bit of chill from the air.

I feel ok with that, as I have taken to cooking stuff for the next day on the stove, give it a good boiling first in a cast iron pan and then sit it on the stove overnight. Usually porridge for breakfast, it comes lovely and creamy, only needs a little reheating, but I have also done red lentils and wholegrain spelt.

Tonight I might put on some brown lentils to see how they cook.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
  • We have got ours on timed but it has been warm today in Northamptonshire so havent turned up the themostat. We have also got a stove and that was lit last weekend but not on 24/7 yet.

Had mine on a couple of times over the last couple of weeks. But now off and has been for quite a few days. Looking at the weather forecast will be off for most of this week ;)
  • Got to love global warming. After cold couple of weeks back, its off and off and, with elec bills etc, here's hoping we keep "destroying our planet" LOL.

Ours was on for a while but now it is OFF again :j

It is 18° during the day, and if it is too chilly in the morning for the humans (the pets are like hot water bottles!) I use my little fan heater, the time for me to warm up and put my clothes on :D

I wish I had a wood burner! And I wish I had a thermostat as well. Oh well, at least, I am lucky to be comfortable :o
