Mine is staying OFF as long as possible. I did tell DDs that in my day we had no central heating, frost on the insides of the windows etc and it did me no harm. Their reply, 'Yes it did - because you're turned into a tight fisted, moany old bag who doesn't care that your children are freezing (whilst they're swanning around in T-shirts)'!

I think the dates are only guidelines. I set 1stNov last year but succumbed a couple of days earlier due to a cold snap. Trying for that again now, but obviously we'll just have to see.

We also need to take into account that there's vast differences for posters who live in Devon/Cornwall/Dorset etc and those who live in the far North and West of Scotland. I'm in the Liverpool area, and we've had it very mild until now but that can (and often does) change very quickly.

Exactly the same here. My oh says he will put it on in Feb. But he is really really tight. No doubt there will be arguments when I get too cold. I did put my eirderdown on the bed last night. But not had the electric blanket on yet.

I have my central heating (water) is set to come on every morning for two hours, which gives me a huge tank of hot water.Last year and this year as well I shall only turn my heating part of the central heating on for an hour at a time as and when I need it. I had a new boiler fitted two years ago and an extra radiator in the sitting room. Its great because I cna now work the heating and water independently.I have had my outside walls insulated with filler and have 8 ins of insulation in the loft so my home is 'A' rated for energy saving. It helps to keep my bills down and that makes a lot of differance when you are a pensioner as I am.My house is rarely cold and yet I can keep a lid on the bills by only turning the heating on if I feel a chill.I have a monitor in my sitting room so I know what the tempreture is and if it drops below a certain point then I switch the heating on for an hour, and that boosts the heat up. I have an electric fire in my main room that I haven't used for two years because its never been cold enough.True I live in the south east, which has milder winters which makes a good deal of difference than someone who lives in the north. My heaviest bill for the quarter last winter for heating was under £80.00.I too put an extra jumper on if a bit chilly and if I'm watching t.v. I have a knitted throw that goes over my knees. Hot drinks and strangely enough a bit of excercise all so hels to keep me warm ,even if its only whooshing round the room with the hoover :)
  • Mine's off and will stay off until I'm desperate.
I hate with a passion the dry feeling central heating gives you.
To be honest I find I function much better and make myself much more mobile when I have no heating on.Then it's lovely being able to slip into a lovely warm bath at the end of the day before bed.
I did'nt put my heating on until the end of first week of December last year and never felt uncomfortable.
Mind you I just love fresh air and from daybreak till dusk I have every window and the back door open no matter what time of year it is so having heating on would be a waste of time realy.
I can understand why other people need there's on though it's just a matter of personal comfort no matter the season.

I'm in the North East and it's still quite mild but me and DS have colds and i've got a chest & ear infection so i did blast it on full heat for an hour last night to take off the chill.

Starting to wonder if i should set it to come on low for an hour before we get up though cos it was cold today!!

Yes, but not at the expense of comfort. I won't wait til I'm really cold then switch the heating on. Same as I won't spend an hour cooking something from scratch (just because it's OS/moneysaving) when I've been out, missed a meal and I'm really hungry. I may even buy a pot noodle  on the way home :D
