bj-sailaway, This probably isn't possible but are there any identical houses around you which have secondard double glazing fitted who might be throwing it out and having new double-glazed windows fitted?
Some years ago we had secondary double glazing throughout and decided to replace our windows. Our next door neighbours living in an identical house didn't have it so we offered them all our secondary double glazing if they could find a carpenter who would remove it from ours and refit it next door. as all the window were identically sized. They found one and the whole transaction only cost them around £100. We were delighted that it could be recycled and they got their house double glazed very cheaply.

Funny you should say that, a neighbour had a conservatory built, and put his double glazed back door in the skip, we asked and he gave it to us dad (retired carpenter) fitted it - still had the keys and everything! Has made a big difference in the dinning room. Most of our neighbours are already double glazed, but yes, I shall keep a keen eye out! i may even put a note of freecycle - never know! There's a lot of houses like ours around here. Thanks for the advise!

I don't think I had mine on at all over the weekend - not except for the heated towel rail in the bathroom, anyway. It just wasn't that cold, and I was wearing a warm jumper. I got a nasty shock when I got out of bed this morning though, as it had turned considerably cooler again overnight! I'm always in two minds about putting the heating on in the mornings, as that tends to be when I feel the cold most but usually I'm only out of bed for a maximum of an hour before going out to work. Evenings and weekends are a different matter, because of being home for longer periods.

  • We've had the heating on for a few weeks now on and off, mostly in the evenings for an hour or two, but a wee while ago when we had snow, I left it on overnight! We had our gas bill today and it was £140 for 2 months, which is fantastic! At our old house it was double that, so we spent last winter freezing, so we have decided to stay warm this winter but we do have an open fire too with a massive supply of free wood so that does help.

    CC limits £26000

    Long term CC debt £0

Total low rate loan debt £3000

    Almost debt free feeling, priceless.

Ex money nightmare, learnt from my mistakes and never going back there again, in control of my finances for the first time in my adult life and it feels amazing.

Had it on for that very cold spell but am glad to report that it is off again while the weather has turned milder. Looked at the imeasure website and while my gas consumption line had gone vertical after switching on the CH, it is now going down again, thanks goodness!

    Hey Caterina,

Good to see you back, did you have a good time and what was the weather like? :D

I see we are in for another cold spell starting Friday with Arctic winds making the temperature feel like -5 to -10:eek:, coldest day is supposed to be Saturday, but it may well last into next week so I'm going food shopping early - the wood stocks are okay and we've bought a couple of bags of smokeless fuel after finding a good cheap supplier. I must also remember to advertise for a coal bunker on Freecycle. Come the weekend I expect to have battened down the hatches and settled in for a siege;).

I am at home all day and wondered when you put your heating on and for how long? or if you work, how long and when do you heat your house at weekends? Trying to cut bills this year, I have invested in blankets and warm jumpers.

I'm at home a couple of weekdays every week studying for my MA and preparing for the classes I teach. I'm fine when I'm moving around and doing household jobs but I get so cold when I'm sitting trying to concentrate on my books. Luckily for my legs (but not so luckily for the electricity bill) my laptop generates loads of heat, but my hands are still icy. I think I might have to get some fingerless gloves, as I can't type with gloves on :rotfl:

I could go into university and use their heating for free, but it's £10.60 on the train... plus cups of tea...
