How do you notice this? Is there a gadget you can buy that shows this? I think I may have seen something recently on tv, but didn't get the full details.

Yes there are gadgets but you just need to watch your meter spin like its gone crazy to know how much it shoots up

I have a gadget that Eon sent me my tumble drier is on at the moment and the figure has really shot up. There is a clamp that fits round the mains cable in the meter cupboard and a display that plugs in anywhere in the house.

The screen shows a daily or monthly average depending on what is switched on.

    The worst is the oven:eek:

Anyone know what these gadgets are called?! (so I might be able to possibly buy one - IF I can afford it...!).

Electricity monitors, I got one from Eon too - but you might find this site helpful http://www.windtrap.co.uk/energy-saving-devices/electricity-monitors/

  • We haven't put our heating on yet. We live in a 3 bed terraced house. We made a decision that as the old lady who lived here before us didn't have central heating, we could manage to do without it. We do have a fireplace, and light a log fire each evening - so we are log scavengers now!

We do sit with my old crochet blankets in the lounge in the evening, but we've actually got to quite like it!

I do wish we had double glazing though. Anyone know of any grants for that we could apply for? We are on quite a limited income.

bj-sailaway, This probably isn't possible but are there any identical houses around you which have secondard double glazing fitted who might be throwing it out and having new double-glazed windows fitted?
Some years ago we had secondary double glazing throughout and decided to replace our windows. Our next door neighbours living in an identical house didn't have it so we offered them all our secondary double glazing if they could find a carpenter who would remove it from ours and refit it next door. as all the window were identically sized. They found one and the whole transaction only cost them around £100. We were delighted that it could be recycled and they got their house double glazed very cheaply.
  • Still never had any form of heating on,so realy pleased. We're sitting in our PJs,no throws or anything else.Either we're acclimatised or it's very, very mild.
Let's hope it stays that way.

Whereabouts are you and can I move next door?;)

Last night it was cold here (North East) and today it is raining heavily and quite nasty altogether so we have kept the log burner on. We put the heating on for half an hour last night to take the chill off the bedroom before we went up but other than that we are still managing on our free wood. Our house is well insulated, cavity wall and double glazing - but Raynaud's means I feel the cold and DH is very skinny so reckons he has no insulation :D, so even though the thermometer rarely drops below 20 degrees it still often feels chill to us.
