I find that I can cope fine with single glazing, in fact the slight draught seems to be healthier, stops us getting colds, and gives you a great sleep. You can always use thick lined curtains. If I'm in a hotel or something with DG then I feel suffocated & cant sleep.
We also find that it works better for us to keep the big stove running all year. If we let it go out then it uses more coal to get going again plus the house cools down.. This is what my norwegian penpals do so I figured if it works for Norway it will work up here:)
Coal costs a lot so we try to save all we can on elect. At least at this way we have a lovely warm house (apart from the back 2 rooms that face north ) and constant loads of hot water for baths.
Just noticed that too Basmic. whoohoo !0 -

Things may change if the forecast snow arrives but we've found that by just having the heating on for a couple of hours in the morning and wearing several thick layers of clothing we can manage without heating most of the daylight hours. Once the light fades temperatures seem to drop quickly so we do switch the heating on then, but keep the thermostat down a couple of degrees A steaming bowl of home-made soup at lunchtime always seems to help us stop feeling cold too.0

Hi all
Popped in to say hi and just our of curiosity to see who hasn't yet put the heating on (we have, and sometimes it flies full force! Some other times only 1 or 2 hours a day, depends).
Hi Unity, Italy was great, very nice weather, a bit stressful as it was a lot of travel all over the place in a short time, and family always a bit stressful too, isn't it?
Glad to be back home though, and sleeping in MY BED!

Yesterday I bought myself an enormous cosy Arran-style cardi from BHS (it was marked down from £35 to £30, and they were doing 20% off everything, so £24
) and as I'm now wearing it I've not needed the heating on today at all, even though it's freezing out :T It's keeping my "core" so warm I'm not even feeling the tiniest bit cold in my fingers and toes.
My poor sister has no heating at all thanks to a boiler malfunction - it's supposed to be being fixed in the next few days so I hope she won't be freezing for longOperation Get in Shape

We put our heating on last night for the first time.Just for an hour as we actually felt a bit uncomfortable.Guess we're just not used to it.We were just so determined,(just a bit of a personal challenge realy)to not put it on until December 1st at the earliest.
One thing I bought last week with some of the money I've saved so far was a heated throw for the sofa. It's a heated overblanket,150w.I think it only comes in chocolate brown and costs not quite 2p an hour to run so all night on the sofa watching tv or whatever is realy cheap and its so warm and cosy.
Mind you we never get to watch anything we're always so comfy we've fell asleep after an hour.I think it's going to be a good investment.
I'm going to get one for my daughter as well for Christmas,I'm so impressed with it.0 -
We've had ours on for a while now. Although until today it was only for an hour or so in the morning and then a couple of hours at night.
We have been wrapping our one year old up well at night so he is toasty but then it occured to me last night that his body maybe warm but he is breathing in cold air which is no good for his chest. He has been coughing loads at night recently and I guess its coz of the cold air.
I've put the heating on constant today but on really low. I might do that tonight as well and see how he is. I wouldn't mind myself and would wrap up but I can't compromise on my son's health.
If it was just DH and I we would just wrap up and snuggle on the sofa.0 -
