Luckily we never need to here. We live in a flat and my flatmate assures me that in all his time here about 18 years he has never once had to have the heating on and I can attest to this for the last 10. This is cos we are a first floor place and the floor below us are all Council tenants - disabled and mostly druggies and drinkers who whack their heating on so high that one year we were in shorts @ Xmas and had to open windows!!

Well it's quite cold tonight here, yet I have my heating on low.

I found the right size box, put some folded newspapers at the bottom for extra insulation, placed a hot water bottle in it and now I'm sitting here with my feet in the box (in warm thick socks of course).

Warm feet keep the rest of me warm as toast. :D
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.

I dont know how you guys managed it!

I've been in my property since Aug and it's been on every day, costing me an arm and a leg. The laminate flooring and a burst front door doesn't help so is there anything else i can do to help keep costs down? Bearing in mind i have a 3 year old and a 10 month old so the place does need to be kept warm.
  • We have had ours on and off for a week or so now, having 2yr old twins and a 6yr old it is them that I worry more about as the bubbas do seem to wake in the night when its cold and they have all got sniffles now too so don't want them to be cold...

I am managing to keep dh from whacking it on constant though (which is what he would do if he had his way) If it was just him and me I would definitely just pile on the layers..,

    Hi all

Just a quick word to those of you who have small kids and are worried about the house being too cold: if the children are well covered by clothes and blankets, a room that is not too hot is much better for their immune system than a stuffy overheated room.

Small babies haven't yet developed an "internal temperature regulation system" so they need a bit of a warmer room, but toddlers who are warmly dressed can withstand a bit of cold without damage if healthy.

We put our heating on last night for the first time.Just for an hour as we actually felt a bit uncomfortable.Guess we're just not used to it.We were just so determined,(just a bit of a personal challenge realy)to not put it on until December 1st at the earliest.
One thing I bought last week with some of the money I've saved so far was a heated throw for the sofa. It's a heated overblanket,150w.I think it only comes in chocolate brown and costs not quite 2p an hour to run so all night on the sofa watching tv or whatever is realy cheap and its so warm and cosy.
Mind you we never get to watch anything we're always so comfy we've fell asleep after an hour.I think it's going to be a good investment.
I'm going to get one for my daughter as well for Christmas,I'm so impressed with it.

Hi Mrs T. Can you tell me where you got the heated overblanket from and if it's not cheek, how much they cost? So far we are still using the wood-burner and the heating is on for an odd 15 minutes in the morning and at night when we go up to bed. To be honest we have to open the doors to let the heat from the stove circulate, as otherwise it is easily 26 degrees in the lounge  and that's with it shut right down. However once the really cold snap ends we won't need it on all the time and one of these blankets seems like a good idea for exactly the situation you described.

We went to CenterParcs for the weekend on 28th November, so got back just before the worst of the weather set in. I was so impressed with the duvets they use, that I contacted them for their supplier. Two king-sized duvets arrived yesterday and ours went on the bed last night - they really are the best I've ever slept under ;).

    Love,

  • Hi Unity,I got the heated throw at Argos it cost £59.99.It's a good size and me and OH can both snuggle under it together on the sofa comfortably.I think it's been a good investment.
