Out of curiosity and with no disrespect to others as I am old too, 1940 and on SP

Most speak of degrees in Fahrenheit yet we adopted Celsius back in 1962 thats 60 years ago

Are most on here older than me? I find it difficult to instantly recognise the temperatures stated

My heating is on most of the time as I feel the cold, 19/20 by day and 16 by night, the weather outdoors doesn't come into it.

Some daytime readings on here are not even as high as my night readings

How do you keep warm ? Do you live in big old houses and can't afford to heat them ?
  • I have a 4 part plan on keeping energy bills low.
    1. We have a log burner. I back into 10 acres of woodland so have access to plenty of free firewood. We usually have a 3 year stockpile. We only light it when it gets really cold.
    2. We have a portable gas heater. I spend the spring & summer buying part full gas bottles. Last year I got hold of 18 large bottles for next to nothing.....enough gas for a couple of years use.
    3. We have solar panels and a solar domestic hot water system. Even in the winter on sunny days we get free hot water. I sell my excess energy to the grid.
    4. We have gas central heating with all the usual whistles & bells to make the system super efficient.
This usually results in a fair degree of comfort all year round at minimal cost.

I think it's about personal preference. I was born in 1963 and grew up 'bi lingual' in most measurements (I'm quite proud of knowing my 'old money') but I always use Celcius for temperature, possibly because bigger numbers are harder to deal with. :)
I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
The sun's been out and I think I’m solar powered (Onebrokelady)

" we adopted Celsius back in 1962"
That didn't stop "F" being used for over 5 decades after that (in 2014 several daily paper headlines were talking about temps being in the 80s) and still today you can for example toggle the BBC online weather between a C or F display and if you follow American sport all the temps are of course in F.

Yes the Americans use F and old money  but are not linked to decimal like we are with Celsius litres and kg.

Just wondered why most were using Fahrenheit, my kids wouldn't know what I was talking about

I remember  F and C in education in the late 70s and looking at a timeline from the pro metric people

    1980
The square inch, square mile, cubic inch, cubic foot, hundredweight, ton, horsepower and Fahrenheit cease to be legally authorised

In the last decade some popular (by circulation) newspapers would quote C when saying how cold it was but "phew what a scorcher" was in F

A recent NFL game was played in -11 which I thought was quite nippy until I realised they were talking F and it was -24 C - I always do a rough conversion to put C to F for the hot end so 80 is hot rather than somewhere in the mid 20s

Your frost prevention program really shouldnt be kicking in, it should only run if the internal temperatures below 5c
I really need to get my head round how the system operates - should be straightforward and the instructions are, but they are also lacking in detail. Some mornings the smart meter reads £1.20 at 8am (acceptable given the standing charge is around 44p x2), others its £4.30 and the floor is warm.

The temperature has dropped to zero for several evenings over the past few days.

I,m 84, severely disabled  (can,t walk ad have no balance due to a degenerating neurone foneeiin) so exercising to keep arm is hard.  Our 50 y.o. House is well insulated (double gazing, cavity wall insulation and double loft insulation.  We wear lots of layered clothing and as a shroud has no pockets have decided we won,t economise on heating bills.

i,m still a feet and inches girl and pounds and ounces too!

Outdoor temperature yes, but not indoor? What is your thermostat set to during the night?
