This morning I was awake and downstairs by 5.30 AM. My drug taking starts now for my illness, and I let the cats out,get some breakfast ready etc. Wife getting ready for work. The temp. In the living room is 14.9 c. and I am dressed appropriately. As I sit I simply put my electric throw over me. In between jobs this morning I will use my ‘throw’ and the heating will be switched on room by room according to needs from about 3.30 pm.6

Boiler fires up, little radiator picture comes on but absolutely no heat in the pipes or radiators. Guess it'll be snuggling in the fleecy slanket til I can get someone out to look at it.

I have had to have words with my brother about heating his home (I've not visited him there for ages but he has high ceilings, wooden floorings and minimal furniture). He is very health conscious but there is some machismo about toughing it out in the cold. Big sister of course made no impact.
His cleaner commented this weekend that his flat is colder than the outside temperature - that single observation persuaded him that heating is necessary! No man is worth crawling on this earth.
So much to read, so little time.6 -
Dull all day so far and started raining steadily about 11 with frequent heavy spells, it has been a bit milder so left the door open before the rain started to warm up indoors a bit - seems to have settled at about 48 so warmer than it has been3

Yesterday was our fourth day of snow but also the beginning of a thaw - we are up to 4 degrees outside now!
We've had the heating on - and last night managed to get the woodburning stove going too (change of fuel was making it hard to light).
Then late in the evening DH had a scare as his heart rate went over 160 beats a minute. Googling and thinking and ringing 111 and we had it down to a few possible causes, but the on-call person recommended going to hospital. The hospital they suggested was miles away on the other side of foggy country roads so he took himself to the local one. I did offer to go too, but he seemed to be okay and there wasn't much I could do as a non-driver. I stayed at home and called the gas emergency line as one of the possible causes of his symptoms was carbon monoxide poisoning, so I had windows and doors open and kept sticking my head out of doors even though the alarms weren't going off.
Long story short, no carbon monoxide was found, though we don't know if there had been a trace that was wafted away. DH was checked over and sent home, then spent half of today back in there while they ran more tests. We're still waiting for some blood results but everything has settled down in the health department and we have a new problem - our gas supply and log burner are out of bounds till they've had safety checks (i.e. operational safety not just checks for the presence of CO). They have to do this apparently because someone had been to hospital because of the possibility of poisoning. (I spent most of the evening in a different room and doors were closed to keep warmth in, so I would have had less exposure had there been a leak). So we've had no heating, either gas or solid fuel.
The people who service our boiler managed to fit us in and the chap spent some time trying to uncap the meter, but came back to us to say it had been done wrongly and he couldn't get back into it. DH has kindly taken on talking to the companies involved, both of whom are sure the other is wrong - and we still have no gas. I suppose at least our gas bill will be a bit lower.
This afternoon we braved our freezing cold loft and fetched out two old electric heaters, and we've got them in the two rooms we use in the daytime. Marvellous! I'm still massively layered up with a hot water bottle, a blanket and hot drinks, and the hall temperature is still 14 degrees (it was 13.5 before the electric heaters went on). I'm actually fairly impressed how well our old mid-terrace is holding on to the heat.

Bladdy hell @Cherryfudge, I hope DH is alright? Fingers crossed the companies sort themselves out and your gas can go back on.I removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.5

Strangely (but I'm not complaining) DH is absolutely fine. The heart failure tests came back negative so now they're looking at B12 deficiency - another test sometime today. The immediate symptoms may have been caused by a drastic drop in blood pressure due to getting out of a too-hot bath. I don't suppose we'll ever know for sure.
The log burner man and I are busy missing each other's phone calls and DH is on standby for the gas companies... today we are looking after one of the grandchildren so we'll be in a warm house, and it's warmer outside too, by which I mean about 5 degrees and no snow.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. That must have been scary CherryFudge! I'm glad he is okay.
I have put the heating on for an hour as I had to wash my hair. It feels far milder here now anyway.

It was 16.5 when I got downstairs today - heating on at 19 all day. Had a letter from our energy company - they are putting the DD down from £84 to £58.50 a month. I want to carry on paying the higher rate. Not received the oap heating money yet.Decluttering Achieved - 2023 - 10,364 Decluttering - 2024 - 8,365 August - 0/45
